a slave for life?

Exodus 21:6 (CEV)
Then he must stand beside either the door or the doorpost at the place of worship, while his owner punches a small hole through one of his ears with a sharp metal rod. This makes him a slave for life.

You know what's really funny about that? Culture.

That's from 2000 years ago and part of the culture back then. And only in that one part of the world. Nowadays piercings don't mean slave and haven't for a long, long time.

And piercings and tattoos are the oldest art forms, created long before piercing meant "slave". So, 2000 years ago it meant slave to one small group of people, and now it doesn't.

Yep and God also has a way to deal with wives accused of cheating on their husbands.

read Numbers 5.

Apparently God required women to drink wanted tainted with dust from the temple where sacrifices occurred daily, and if they survived then they weren't cheating, and were innocent. Of course the results of tainted water are listed also, and women died horrible deaths as a result of this barbaric practice.

God was a bit rough on women for 4000 years there.

Only if you believe the Bible has to be taken literally, and is still applicable several thousands of years later.

Besides, I suspect the hole in the ear was merely a symbol of the slavery, not itself creating it. Does the fact that slavery has been outlawed count for nothing?

It was pretty common practice to mark a slave some way back then so that there was legal proof they were your property. The Romans commonly slit the earlobe.
