Oh I think manners are crucial in the world. I wouldn't work WITH a rude dude and I wouldn't work FOR one either. And a person with good manners speaks reams to his character believe me. Unless you were syrupy and strangely placating with it, I'd certainly give you points in an interview.

Lots of people don't give a rat's patoody but I think it does matter in everyday life to be courteous and thoughtful (holding doors for others who are close and coming behind you), saying please and thankyou, using Sir and Mam and Miss or Ms. when appropriate are all very much a part of the business world as well. Most of the world agrees that customer relations is a huge part of their business and trust me, manners in those relations is the backbone.

For me just a hint far or nowhere at all and a few times the other direction.

For others it can range at least from a little to pretty far. It doesn't hurt though if anything.

Though I've known some employers to start loathing "thank you letters" from past interviews they had etc.

Far! Sometimes it seems that so few people use the words that if you do, out of habit, the way you were raised, it amazes people, makes them remember you and the next time you interact with them...they remember. Besides which it is just polite. But don't use them if you aren't sincere!

Years ago, I needed some equipment cleared through incoming, calibration, etc. I called the guy in charge...he said everyone needed everything ASAP. I explained we really needed it. I am sure I used the word please. He came through and I walked down 2 flights of stairs and across 3 buildings to stand in his office. He was screaming at someone on the phone....then asked me what I was doing there...what the &%&*@ did I need now? I was young and he startled me so I just blurted out what came to mind and was incidentally the truth.....I just came to say Thank You. He looked a bit stunned at first and then asked if that was really all it was? Yes! You walked all the way here to say thank you? Yes! It was a bit sad, he said no one ever said thank you....the best he ever got was someone saying "about time" over the phone. For the record, I never walked down again, when something came in with my name associated with it or my groups charge number....he would call to ask how soon we needed it or tell me it was on its way....I would tell him it wasn't hot or urgent but still we got our stuff first. And that is the power of please and thank you!

Still works for me today. I write that but I am sincere in both.

Depends on the context. There was an older gentleman in the news recently here in London. He was on a tube train, and he got up to get off. Some young guy had his legs stretched out. The old guy said "Excuse me" to try and get past him.

He was in a coma for four days, and will be in hospital for a while yet. Had the living daylights beaten out of him, for daring to say "Excuse me". Strange, sad world we're living in...

since a lot of people don't do it any more, saying please and thank you will get you very far. I always say thank you to the waiter or waitress to the bus driver when I used to take the bus to school. to the mailman. it's polite and it shows you have manners.
