Derek B....I'm not talking about cotton candy, fluff, candy coated sermons. I don't think any sermon should be watered down.
My reason for asking this question was because my old pastor (non-denominational) preached one night how JW's are a cult, Catholics are a cult, people who believe in Jesus name are under bondage and that the person who started the Jesus Name only movement had stayed up too late one night and had too much coffee and just thunk it up (yes, he used 'thunk'), and etc... So basically, he was saying he, and he alone was correct. He promoted disharmony and seperation among Christians.
Whether or not you agreed with what he said... How did that sermon lift up the body of Christ? How did it edify the Church?

There is nothing inappropriate to preach about.Why?Simple.Teaching and preaching cotton candy theology doesn't get the true message across.Take Joel Olsteen for an example. If his daddy was alive,he would get thrown out of the pulpit. Why?Because leading the flock is serious business. When you go into church,it's not self help,it's Jesus Christ. It's all about Jesus.Olsteen's not doing that.He is leading his flock down a path of damnation, and should be called out.
Hey,there is some ugliness in the bible.Would you expect anything less from the sin of this world?God and his chosen people dealt with sin and persecution all through the bible. It must be taught cover to cover. From Genesis to Revelations.
Here's something a lot of people might not know. The prophet Isaiah was cut in half.Did you know that?

I'm not sure who the "many" is that you refer too because the God of Christianity is never referred to in the feminine form and like others here have said, I wouldn't attend a congregation that claimed such a thing. God made Adam (the first male) in His is image. Eve was created from a rib in Adam's side. At best it can be said that she was created as the feminine image of the earthly image of God. Except for the new convoluted book, the Bible makes it perfectly clear that God in heaven is the Father to all mankind. Jesus Himself referred to His "Father in heaven" no less than 20 times. And that has absolutely nothing to do with God being sexist, or any traditional bigotry of the time period. Sometimes you just have to accept that the way it is, is the way it is. If that's a problem for some, then perhaps you're equally upset over the fact that your dad is a male and your mother is a female?

Anything that takes away from the spirit being able to be there. So pretty much anything that breeds hate or ill feelings towards others.
Also, as someone else said, something they don't practice. Of course, if they make a disclaimer first that they are trying to live the lesson they are teaching, then maybe the sermon was really for them and a few others, and not necessarily for everyone else.

The story of the Good Samaritan sounded pretty antisemitic when I heard it in Church a few Sundays ago. I think it was probably antisemitic when written though. Seems like Jews often turn up as the bad guys in the New Testament. Isn't it time for a modern day rewrite? I just heard of something called Mitzvah Day which made me think that Jews may be the BEST "Good Samaritans" I know.
Mitvah day falls on different days depending on the community. I found this description on one site that pretty much sums it up: "To engage in a project that will feed the hungry, clothe the naked, bring comfort to the sick, green our environment or so many others in our catalogue of choices on Mitzvah Day should lead us to continue on that path for the whole year and beyond."*

Most sermons have decent messages, but every now and then you will get a pastor who is hell bent on creating a legacy or end-time focused, and they tend to be manipulative and tell people that they have a direct access to God and his will for individuals.
Benny Hinn is a great example of this, he is using his 'healing' ministry and pulls in over $100 Million per year that is documented. The after effects of his campaigns are poor people with less money, and several sick people wondering why God doesn't love them.
that is inappropriate.

I have gone to church on and off for years and I think that one of the hardest things for people to do is to agree on things 100% of the time. if you look at a book it is subect to interpretation and your own understanding, then there's a person's spiritual side which is his own and in my opinion should only be advised when someone's opinion is asked. we all know what is preached about the various issues in the mainstream, it is simply a person's choice to follow it or not. if anything I think the most inapropriate sermon lasts longer than 45 minutes. Those church benches aren't exactly soft, and they don't provide pillows for a little ciesta! good day folks!

Most importantly would be the preaching on Heaven and Hell. One should not be taught to believe based on selfishness or to escape punishment, but because God gave us life, would you rather be dust like adam. If he didn't send adam to hell who along with eve who started the mess by not following God, do you really think our loving God would send us to hell? I dont think so.
I was raised a baptist along with the above, I got tired of hearing an entire sermon about giving money to the church, amazing our preacher got a brand new car a few months later. No self control.

Anything that is NOT in the Bible. Such as twisting the scripture completely. A misunderstanding is bad but to preach a message contrary to what they believe themselves because they are afraid of running off some of the money payers when they hear the truth.

If it is addressed in God's Word it would not be inappropriate. And sometimes even things that are not mention by name, such as abortion, or porn, still would not be inappropriate. It is a pastors job to lead his congregation, (flock) in the way that is right. If it steeps on toes so be it, if it offends someone who is caught up in the middle of something they should not be in, in the first place they should think about what they are doing.
