use what you have...dawn dish soap? baby powder or any other powder. for lack of powder, you can use corn starch, baking soda etc. baby oil, or even cooking oil for lack of anything else. give the cats a bath in the dish soap and then coat them in the powder heavily, also put the powder on the carpet, and leave it there. if no powder, use the oil after the bath to coat the cats. fleas don't like it and will be encouraged to jump off.also put the oil on the kids legs and ankles, suntan oil would be good for that too but not the cats, because they will lick it.got any peppermint? soak some peppermint candy in water untill desolved, then put it on the cats and the kids. fleas can't breathe in it. hope one of these ideas works for you, untill you get to the vet.

Don't use Dawn!!! it has petroleum in it and is very dangerous to any animals liver and kidney function!!!
Bathing the cat does nothing to rid the carpet of fleas. And most the fleas live in the carpet and only get on people and animals to feed then get back into the carpet. IF you do as previously answerer you will have blood stained carpets due to the fleas poop is blood and when wet it will stain your carpets.
use off ...for mesquitos on the humans
Use Advantage......for cats.....it works great kills fleas with in 24 hours and I mean all of them....
I have 3 dogs and 10 cats and never a flea problem.
~~~~You can use regular people shampoo ans leave it on for 5 minutes to kill the fleas on the pet but it will not stop an reinvestation.~~~~
By the way some Vets and groomers will sell Advantage by the tube so you don't have to buy the whole package until you can afford it.
It will take 3 or 4 months to completely kill all fleas and eggs unless ur cat is indoor outdoor cat then it will take longer.
Good luck.
Vacuum your carpets thoroughly with a fresh bag, and then immediately take the vacuum bag to the outside trash (otherwise the fleas will just crawl back out).
Use a flea comb on the cat and drown the fleas in a jar of soapy water.
When you visit the vet on Saturday, ask about something like Frontline or Advantage. Flea shampoos, powders, etc. don't work very well, in my experience.
First of all, you can bathe your cat with Dawn dishwashing liquid (make sure it's the plain, blue kind). You can pick that up for a couple of bucks. My vet says this is safe, as long as you rinse the cat well. This soap kills the fleas on the animal.
Next, vaccum your carpets VERY thoroughly, and spend more time than usual doing this. After vaccuming, spray hot, soapy water on them, enough to wet them, but not saturate them. Let dry, and vaccum again.
Repeat process as necessary.
Use a flea comb,this is what I did until I discovered Fronline it's fantastic.My kitten has been flea free since I started using this. 3 months supply is about £22. I used Bob Martins Flea bombs a few months ago in my home,I found this product fantastic too. You have too use one for each room. They cost about £4.99.Good luck.
