She is very much appreciated around the world in music world. So do we have enough information about her? Do we appreciate her enough?

hurricane i don't know why you got a thumb down. but definitely it was not from me.
The thing disturbs me more is we know more about Maria Callas than our own Leyla Gencer.

Turkish people actually listen to Opera music by the way. Last year Patrizio Buenna concert for ex. (harbiye acikhava) was full. He is Italian and we know him better than Italians:) Or many other things lik ethis i have been in Turkey were complete.
We know other countries' music people we don't know and appreciate our people. that makes me sad.

Leyla Gencer is one of the best recognized sopranos in the world and her singing technique is knows with its unique name "gencerate"
If I am not mistaken, she was the first Turkish artist who took stage in "la Scala"
There is also a back stage rumor that Maria Callas was envious of her voice and technique, which as I said can not be a fact since it is a rumor :)
I am not a good opera listener and never watched an opera live- I really would love to someday- but I read her biography written by Zeynep Oral and was quite amazed.
Therefore I also want to add a question to yours; I wonder how many people know about our great violin "virtuose"- probably spelling it wrong- ; Suna Kan?
EDIT: Of course the majority don't appreciate them.
Suna Kan and Leyla Gencer didn't wear bikinis to show off their legs and Fazıl Say is only mentioned when he dumps Hande Ataizi and finds himself a Chinese( or Japanese?) girlfriend.

But I know a great classical ballet dancer who won the French National Conservatoire Contest : Tan Sagtürk, who is the first Turk who ever won the title of " Danseur Etoile".

you know Leyla Gencer is one of the most talented sopranoes in the world but i'm sure most of us hasn't heard her name.
Once upon a time Sertab Erener was a opera singer too,but she had to change her major because of the Turkey's facts :(
