You may have accidentally pressed the "insert" button -- it is to the right of "backspace" and above "delete." It is a toggle. Press for on, press for off.

Normally, with insert on, anything you type will be entered to the left of the cursor and existing text moves to the right. With insert off, whatever you type will replace existing text.

Did that do it for you?

If this happens every time you open a document, your Options are probably set to start in Overtype mode. Here's how you can fix that permanently:

1.Click on the Tools->Options menu item.
2.Click on the Edit page.
3.Under Editing Options, make sure the Overtype Mode checkbox is clear.
4.Click OK.

That should do it.

It sounds like you have the overwrite feature turned on.

Look at the bottom or your word document. Where it says Page 1... Section 1. In the middle, you'll see 4 greyed out boxes REC, TRK, EXT, OVR. If the OVR box is not greyed out, then the OVeRwrite feature is enabled. Just double click on the OVR to turn off the overwrite feature and then edit away!

Enjoy! :-)

you are in the overtype mode ... look at the status bar at the bottom of the window for the letters OVR

To return to the insert mode, press the INSERT key on your keyboard and the OVR will go away

Press the Insert button. That'll clear the problem. Should be over by the number pad.
