I do believe it should be done. THis gives the children a way to really labour on the word and become constituted with the truths in the Word. Sitting passively in a classroom does just that much... but when you are given a way to delve into teh Riches of the Word then the Lord is able to really impart something of Himself to you.. For the Children this can be doen according to their ages and a good study book is truly a need.
It gives them accountability and in the process they can memorize the word and hide it in their young hearts.

Sunday schools almost always give "homework" to the children and adults. There is usually a reading assignment before the next sunday.

It sounds like a good idea to me. Later on getting to know the translation from the Greek, Latin and Hebrew and maybe the Arabic.
In the line judging the quick and the dead; what does quick mean. Answer living. What does Satin mean? Answer challenger.
I wish there were a site we can go to to get the meaning of words. Preachers often study Latin, Hebrew and Greek and it would be nice if we had the advantage that they have.
I think The Bible is a better read when I understand the meaning of things, don't you?

I do, but nothing like school... my kids have to learn a Bible verse each Sunday or I may give them a few Bible verses to look up in the Bible and tell me the next Sunday where they are located in the Bible. I have about 9 - 12 to 15 years old.

I hope not, I never had homework from Sunday School, and neither did my kids. They get enough homework from school.
Adult Sunday School classes, I suppose, don't go to those classes, but my kids never get homework from Sunday School. The only time my kids had to "study" for church was leaning their lines for the Christmas play.

Oh, man. I think this was where my avoidance of church started.
When I was a kid in Sunday School they did give us homework to do and made us memorize the book names and verses and such. I HATED it. It felt like school to me, and school was a thing to be looked down upon. I came up with any excuse I could to get out of it.

Well, I guess they should encourage them to apply whatever they learned to their lives in the week to come, but other than that, homework is probably a sure way to make kids never want to come to Sunday school again!

My Sunday School doesn't have homework (like say worksheets or essays) but it does have required readings (we are going through a theology book)

Yes and it should involve Independent Study of a Subject and them asking Questions as a Result! Unless they "Dig Out" Information and "Think" about it, they will never Learn. It is part of learning the "Methods of Study" so that when "Confronted" later in Life, they will have the "Mechanism" to "Solve" it & "Prove" it to themselves from a "Position of Strength" making "Good Decisions" from the "Position of Scripture, Gods' Holy Word.
