They need to know where they are going when they die. They need to know that some invisible force loves them. They need answers that are easier and quicker to gain and understand then those given to them through rationality. They need to be a part of a community of others who believe exactly as they do otherwise they wouldn't bother trying to convert others. They need to know that they are right and everyone who doesn't agree with them is wrong. They are needy.

Religious ppl shall not b needy. God said " The Lord is my shephered i shall need nothing".
They may b pray for things which God gives them after a long time, and that to make sure they would not use them wrongly. Or He does that to teach them something.
Good luck!

Everyone is needy. We need food, air, water and shelter; and if we have those, then we move on to our emotional needs--which many people find religion to be a comfort for.

Nope, I've got exactly what is needed in this life and the next -- I am not ashamed to have faith in the L-RD G-d (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit). If that makes me weird, uneducated, or illogical in 'your opinion' so be it. Because that opinion will not count when we all die. Consider this, you can not be 100% sure of what will happen when you die.

they're in need of a crutch. an easy answer to the unanswered questions. It's HARD to think that we're all alone, it's HARD to explain things with math and science. It's a cop out.

I think religous people simply need other people. I don't know that it's a bad thing to need; we are a gregarious species, after all.

They need that feeling of support. God has their back and will watch out for them. Nonbelievers are able to walk on their own knowing that they are in charge.
