This is what the Bible says;
(Ecclesiastes 9:5-6) For the living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all, neither do they anymore have wages, because the remembrance of them has been forgotten. 6 Also, their love and their hate and their jealousy have already perished, and they have no portion anymore to time indefinite in anything that has to be done under the sun.
But there is hope.
We will be resurrected.
(Revelation 20:12-13) And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and scrolls were opened. But another scroll was opened; it is the scroll of life. And the dead were judged out of those things written in the scrolls according to their deeds. 13 And the sea gave up those dead in it, and death and Ha′des gave up those dead in them, and they were judged individually according to their deeds.
While they were dead, they were conscious of nothing. Then they were resurrected. thgeir judgement is not on what they had done in their previous life [ that is paid for] but on how they react to God's new system, into which they had been resurrected.
(Romans 6:23) For the wages sin pays is death, but the gift God gives is everlasting life by Christ Jesus our Lord.
Wages is full payment for something. In this case, ALL YOUR SINS.

First, your question is "do you believe." I prefer not to believe or dis-believe things which can not be proven or dis-proven. Many of your respondents base their answers on faith. Faith is the art of believing that which can not be proven. I suppose
I'm not much of an artist. According to the book _The God Delusion_ when Carl Sagan was asked what his gut feeling was about alien life, he said, "I prefer not to think with my gut."
Some things are unknowable, and I am totally at peace with that.
A second issue you raise is faith in God as a route to heaven. Another of those who replied here said, in essence, that we should live properly in this life, and anything else will sort itself out. I agree with that. If there is a God, why would he or she need me to be a fan? Does my not being a fan of the top poster make that person's posts less insightful? Of course not! The answers are either good or they are not. God either exists and is insightful, or He does not. Either way, my thoughts on the matter are beside the point.
The third issue is "just rewards." If one believes that heaven rewards those who live well and hell punishes those who do not, then there seems to be ultimate justice and also restraint for our actions.Good people don't need the restraint, and bad people will not heed it. Goodness is its own reward. I prefer to pursue justice for those who do evil on earth through earthly courts.

I can't enlighten you. I have been in life-threatening situations a number of times and had a similar experience each time. After accepting the inevitable, I felt a tremendous calm and feeling of well-being. All anxiety left me and I felt that the final outcome would be just fine. There is no way I have found to communicate this to another person, but I have met a number of people who reported having the same experience.

Beautiful quote.
I, for one, do not believe in life after death...nor do I want to. What would be the point? Why have life on this earth before you move on to a better life? What would this supposed God's purpose be in putting us all on this earth instead of having all of us born in heaven?
Edit:"basic physics, energy can not be created or destroyed, only changed, so yes, I do believe in something after death"
Basic physics, that only describes matter. Your 'soul' is not 'matter', just like feelings or desires do not have 'matter'. You can't hold them in your hand; they are psychically nonexistent. However, your body will decompose and become a part of the earth. Your BODY will never disappear, it will just transform until it becomes part of the earth.

Dear Ron,
Since we are made in the image and likeness of God we will exist forever. However, God does tell us very plainly that some be resurrected to life and some to damnation. In John 5:28-29 we read, "Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,
29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation."

No. And while mass-energy can't be created or destroyed it can be converted. Yes, your body will break down. Think of your consciousness the way a computer works. If you smash up the computer with a sledgehammer, the matter making up the computer will still exist, but it will no longer function as a computer - no response to mouse movement or keystrokes.

Well.............The idea of life AFTER death, implies that death somehow interrupts life. I personally don't believe it does. The nature of life is to live. I think what we see as death is a powerful and very organic illusion which draws its power from the belief that we are our bodies. I don't believe anything stops life, but there are things that influence it to change from one of its infinite forms to another. And even if I'm wrong, it's still a nice thought.

Not one bit.
--
So many of these people mention Physics without realizing that less than 20% of Physicists believe in God, much less wondering if there's a reason for that.
Our energy will be transferred to the plants, animals and insects that break down our proteins.

I honestly don't care.
I'm focused on making this life what I can, come what may. Why let this life go to seed worrying about what may or may not occur next? Live life as a good person; that is its own reward.
