No, you can't. Basically, if you have a claim (accident, theft, etc...), both companies could point to the other company and say they aren't responsible. Having duplicate coverage is actually illegal in most states. If you are getting new insurance, make sure you cancel your old policy as soon as the new one is in force, you will then get a refund for overpaid premium.

This is a yes and no question. Yes you can in the event you have one carrier cover the vehicle for liability and the other cover for physical damage. No you can not have two insurance companies insuring a vehicle for liabilty and no you can not have two comapanies insuring a vehicle for physical damage. That would be considered insurance fraud and is a felony in many states.

Why would you want to? Only one will pay in the case of an accident. If you switched companies, you should have gotten a rebate for unused time of policy.

Why would you want to do this? You do not get double the benefit, or any additional benefit. You just pay more money.
