Is it simply freedom from anxiety, stress, etc, or is it more than that? Have you experienced "peace which passeth all understanding"? What does it feel like?
Does spiritual peace stay with you all the time (when you are living by divine law), or do you feel it only when you do certain things? (And what are those things?)
Have there been times when you have felt an amazing sense of peace as a form of comfort when you were distressed?
I'm interested in understanding the experiences of all religious people in regards to spiritual peace.
I'm trying to fathom the fundamental principles behind gaining (and keeping) this feeling. Is it possible to feel it constantly?

I find the peace that is freedom from anxiety, calmness, tranquility when practice mindfulness, meditation, or listening to relaxing music, and also when I practice tolerance. This kind of peace is freedom from suffering.
But the "peace which passeth all understanding" (or the Holy Spirit) is something that I seem to feel most when contemplating on God or Jesus Christ and when living according to divine law. When I love and serve my fellow man (for the purpose of serving my Lord and God), I feel that peace radiating throughout my whole heart, and lighting up my mind and my smile.
It's more than just an absense of suffering... This kind of peace is a connection that is undeniable, knowing that I am within God's love, and I am His child.

I asked this question because, the doctrine of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (of which I am a member) is that all people have access to truth, through the Holy Spirit, but only those who are given "the Gift of the Holy Ghost" by the laying on of hands by those who have authority, will have the great blessing of feeling the CONSTANT companionship of the Holy Ghost.
That is, as a LDS/Mormon, I feel that peace all the time, provided I am remembering Christ, and keeping his commandments.
I have wondered for a while if it was true, that we have received a unique gift through baptism and "the laying on of hands for the Gift of the Holy Ghost."
The answers given here, many by spiritual people, confirm to me the doctrine that LDS have, indeed, been given a sweet and unique gift, through the power and authority of God's holy priesthood.
I invite you to come and share in this beautiful feeling, and further investigate these claims.
Love and Peace.

ie... I wondered if other spiritual people were also able to feel the "constant companionship of the Holy Spirit" or, in other words, constantly feel a great sense of love and peace. We are taught that all people can feel these things, at certain times, but only LDS can feel it ALL the time.
During "up" times in my life, when I have been thinking right thoughts, exercising faith, keeping the commandments, etc, I have felt this constant peace. My doubts were in regards to whether or not other people might be able to feel constant peace, too, even though they had not received the authorised priesthood ordinance. It seems that your answers have cleared this up for me.
Thank you. xo

I offer this information by way of invitation for you to try out "Mormonism". I hope that you, my friends, realise that I have great respect for you, and for the truth that is so abundant in every religion.

Wow, sorry I am so long winded! But I replied with my first few comments after reading half of the replies!
Now that I have read the ones down the bottom, I once more realise that my doubts are not completely allayed. While I have no doubt that my religion brings me great (and constant) peace, I wonder if there are people out there who DO feel that peace constantly, through having that balance of right thought, right action, at the right time... through a perfect balance of devotional service and love to fellow man. Hmmm??
But my invitation still stands. Welcome! :-)

Hi Mum, I am still working on that one. I imagine it to be acceptance and contentment, but I really don't know yet. Hope to soon.

The very definition of happiness or peace is " Yo vai bhooma tatsukham". It means that 'what is of unlimited magnitude and for unlimited time, can only be considered as happiness'. Changing mood by the hour is not what we call happiness.
The happiness's what we are experiencing are 'illusions' in nature. A person on death will arouse varying degrees of reactions from acquaintances. Spouse will be most sad, son too much but little lesser, maid or valet quite a lot but even lesser, the neighbour will say alas and continue with his chores, and a debtor to the deceased will even feel happy. A reverse reaction will take place, if by chance it is known that the person declared dead, was not actually dead and has been miraculously revived by the doctors.
So the same event or person or thing can give varying degrees of pleasures or sorrows to different people. Hence we are living in illusive pleasures or even sorrows.
When we somehow (by hook or crook!) manage to get the real happiness, we are with it for ever and ever. And the description of it's magnitude can not be imagined. It is infinite and increasing progressively!
Everything is possible in this world!

Wow..it's been awhile since I've been on here lol. So *smile and waves hi* :) And the answer as to whether if I have inner peace or not is definitely 'YES!'---I have always been very grateful and blessed for the little things in life. Growing up, I have learned to appreciate most anything that life has to offer. I have this mentality that there is always someone somewhere else worst off and would do anything to trade place with some of us who have it made but does not know how to embrace nor appreciate what we have. So armed with this awareness, I can do most of what you mentioned above with very minimal to NO aids of drugs, alcohol, and anything else that most people would otherwise need to get through a typical day.

I've never felt it constantly..but I've experienced it when I have needed it most. Its sorta like "knowing" without actually knowing that everything is going to be alright even though it doesn't look like it. Not too much can phase you inspite of the circumstances cuz this peace overwhelms the anxious, fear and stress that usually are required to deal with any given situation. I'm a worrier by nature...always have been and always will be..I can glimpse a thing happening in my mindseye (child running into the street, choking, being stolen) and feel a tinge of the panic associated with how I would feel as if that event had already happened. Also there are other things like when in one week the water heater over heats, the vehicle needs a major repair and due to circumstances there is a job change and not enough money in the bank - anxiety settles in. So I pray and I think to myself..."What the heck do I spend so much time worrying and fretting when we have been okay before and we will be fine this time.." Truely I think my worry does make me more cautious and careful and that's a good thing. Some people never worry or make preparations....but I used to carry it too far...where it would keep me up at night...especially with regard to my kids..my babies..you know what I mean, I know you do. That demon of fear steals your joy though...instead of being with them and loving the minutes you spend there is this underlying terror something is going to snatch them out of your life. So..whadya do? Think on who is in control..who you can trust...who knows more than you? He who is in me is more powerful than he who is in the world. Fear is an evil spirit...Jesus said I didn't give you a spirit of fear but of peace...that comes from trust and trust comes from faith and faith comes by hearing the Word of God. So I stay in my Bible, I pray and I thank Him everyday that my family is safe and together. I take nothing for granted but I'm not always waiting for the other shoe to drop either. He's always been there for me and what control do I really have anyway? Life is chaos and mess and random event strewn and always will be...but God is all about knowing where every single molecule of every atom of every detail of every single solitary thing is and what its doing...that's power..so leave it up to Him. Love in Christ, ~J~

Inner peace is when you learn to quiet the storm of your mind, and think and feel clearly without a great deal of superfluous and useless thoughts and feelings which make no sense in context. You know how the mind flutters about like a sort of butterfly, resting on certain ideas for a time, and then moves on to the next? Inner peace is the ability to control that butterfly, and control your behavior completely without all the distractions. It can only be attained through years of meditation and learning.

Only God can give you inner peace. And it's more than just a feeling of not being in strife at the moment. It's a feeling like no other, it's really hard to explain. It's knowing that no matter what happens mentally, physically, spiritually , God's there and it's okay. I can give every burden to the Lord and I never think of it again. Peace

I am a Christian and I have experienced alot of joy and peace through my relaionship with Jesus. There is great comfort in knowing that what ever happens Jesus will be with you, He will never forsake you. Through a relationship with Christ you gain understanding, love, peace, happiness.
To answer your last question yes it is possible to experience this forever. When a belive dies he goes to heaven. Where peace, joy and love rule. After the end of days God will create a new heaven and earth where all belivers will live out the rest of eternity (never ending) is a constant state of joy, peace, and love. God promises to give the ones who love him things so amazing that we here on earth cannot even think of them.
I hope you turn to Jesus in love.
Christ be with you.

Yes_ Bhakti Yoga (Krishna Consciousness) When I am chanting or when I see beautiful pictures of the lord or His Deity form, when I am serving Him and He reciprocates with Me by making me feel very happy and peaceful within. If we stop hankering for peace and just hanker to serve and love God with all of our heart then we will be peaceful. But if we try to get peace in this material conception of life. We will never get it and if we do it is an illusion. There is no peace on the material plane. Only on the spiritual platform and it comes from pure devotional service. Hope this helps. Thanks.

I very nearly died one summer afternoon when I was seven. I almost drowned. I had to be resuscitated. And when I was coming back into consciousness, my body was feeling a lot of pain and there was vomit coming out of my mouth and nose and ...
... I was in a silent ecstasy.
Not because I thought "Oh, this means I didn't die," but because of the hard to describe but utterly simple and utterly exquisite fact that anything at all is happening.
My meditative and spiritual practice centers itself on that, that Miracle- which- is- everything. And when I can clear my obsessions, preoccupations, and petty heart-mind addictions enough to see and touch that Miracle again ... I am at peace.
It's a peace that very literally lies beyond the grasp of my understanding.
It feels/ is something like knowing like love what it is to be.

feelings come and go and are an unrealiable source of the spiritual , I think, and I dont know if this is perfectly correct, but I beleive it is the peace one feels when in a state of Grace. That is not being conscience of any serious offence against God. We have peace in that sence for sure. Im sure it does not mean that we always have good "feelings", for Im sure Jesus did not have good feelings on the cross, but you can be assured he did have "peace" in knowing he did all he could for mans redemption and sanctification.

Spiritual peace is loving all the creatures that ever lived and knowing that Gods love isn't compromised. You know that even those that may be mislead or cruel serve the greater purpose and that those who suffer do not do so in vain, it goes beyond hope to a certainty that doesn't strain your credulity.
You know all is well.
It is as peaceful as a sleeping baby.
It is the realization of the perfection of life.
It is enlightenment.
It is love.
