It is not that I can't totally afford it. I just don't want to pay an outragious price...guess I should have worded it better. I have a 2 year old Alaskan Malamute and 2 cats that I take very good care of and go to the vet on regular check-ups and for vaccines and whatever else they need. One of my cats was just very ill and it cost me $160.00 for a vet visit...so yes I can afford to take care of my animals or I would not of got them.

Yes there are Minature Pomeranian's. My Mother in Law has a minature pom and my Grandpa has a regular size Pom. They are very different in size. I had the chance of buying one today but they wanted $700.00 for it and I just can't see paying that for a dog. I got my Alaskan Malamute for free and he is a $1,500.00 Dog. Got lucky...I guess!!!

884 Pomeranians available for adoption on Petfinder:

http://search.petfinder.com/search/search.cgi?animal=Dog&breed=Pomeranian&preview=1&exact=1

Adoption fees can range all the way up to $400- if fees are this high, though, they MUST include spay/neuter, all shots. Most shelters will also have done heartworm tests/preventative, and if you're really lucky, a microchip for ID.

You can also Google "Pomeranian Rescue- Illinois" and see what comes up.

Think rescue. Don't buy from a pet store or BYB just because of the price. The price should be the least of your concerns. The dog's health and temperament should be foremost.

There are currently 884 Pomeranians and Pomeranian mixes up for adoption on petfinder.com. A reputable shelter will charge between $100 and $200 to cover animal-care costs and to ensure serious owners only.

I have done a search using a Chicago zip code. Enter your own zip code to find poms near you. You will find more matches if you change the age from "baby" to "young."

Please consider adoption instead of buying a dog. It is more affordable, but more importantly, you will be saving a life!

Do.not.buy.a.miniatue.pom.
A regular pom is small enough. The people marketing 'mini' and 'teacup' poms are selling unhealthy, poorly bred dogs.

A well bred pom will easily run about $800 (cheaper than that and I'd be thinking 'puppy mill')
And that is as *serious* as my answers get.

If you can't afford that much then get a shelter dog. If you don't have $500 lying around for buying a dog, then I have serious questions about whether you can afford to feed and medically care for a dog though.

EDIT
There are teeny poms, they used to be called runts. Now they're called 'minis' and 'teacups' and sold for premium prices. THAT's what your MIL has, a runt.

No there really isn't a "miniature" Pom..these are only dogs that are smaller then the breed standard allows. They are a sales gimic used by irresponsible breeders in order ot sell runts or dogs delibrately bred to not be at standard. Be aware that dogs bred delibrately smaller then the breed standard very often have health issues many of which are very serious. They also often have much shorter life spans.
Responsible breeders do NOT delibrately breed "miniatures" or "teacups" nor do they advertise the small dogs of a litter as such. Be ware of those breeders who do..they are breeding irresponsibly.

there is no such thing as a "minature" pomeranian...

the best way to find a puppy is to check out your local shelters, or go through the breed club, in this case look for pomeranina breed club in illinois, to find a responsible breeder...

but going through a breeder you wont find much for under what youve found...
from a shleter your looking at an adoption fee anythign from $25-$300.

pomeranians only come in one size. there is no such thing as a minature pomeranian. you could get a normal sized one as opposed to a bigger non breed standard one, but not a minature one. they dont exist.

oh, and if you cant afford to buy the dog, then how are you going to afford to take care of the dog. god forbid it becomes seriously ill.

Your best bet is to check local or state rescues, but do not expect to find a puppy.

If you can't afford the price of a quality puppy, how on earth do you expect to be able to afford to feed it and keep it healthy? You have to take dogs for shots every year, ya know and you can't get them "for cheap".

They are supposed to be miniature naturally. They are in the toy group. NO such thing or at least shouldn't be.
