The only veterinary school near Sacramento is U.C. Davis but they are a teaching hospital and charge for services. If you need just basic vaccinations or spay/neuter, an SPCA or humane society may be able to help with low cost services. But they are not a full-service vet and they don't treat sick animals. Look on www.petfinder.com to see what organizations are close to you.

I work for a Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital and when it comes to the routine procedures (such as spays and neuters) the fees are reduced because advanced students are able to perform the procedure with assistance. As far as diagnostic care like you need...there are specialists in care that would be attending to your dogs (not students directly)and that is quite pricey...the initial exam fee alone is 2-3 times higher than any regualr vet clinic I've worked for in the past. I would recommend calling your local vets and ask them the initial exam fees. Without examining the dogs it is nearly impossible to deterimine treatment or the cost. But depending on the skin condition (there are many possibilites) the longer you wait the more severe and costly it can become. Good luck to you and poochies!
