Not sure why this is in the cancer area but I want to reassure you that ADD and cancer aren't related. There are many theories as to the cause of ADD - the most recent seem to hold that there's a genetic correlation. Take a look at the information below from Dr. Peggy Elam: http://health.ivillage.com/mentalhealth/mhadhd/0,,6bsq,00.html

According to an article by National Institute of Mental Health http://www.nimh.nih.gov/publicat/adhd.cfm#cause
"Most substantiated causes appear to fall in the realm of neurobiology and genetics. This is not to say that environmental factors may not influence the severity of the disorder, and especially the degree of impairment and suffering the child may experience, but that such factors do not seem to give rise to the condition by themselves"

I asked this same question when it was "highly suggested" to me that my 9 yr. old son be tested. I found out 3 interesting facts when I asked a state physician...
1. A doctor cannot volunteer cause info unless the patient very specifically asks.
2. That it is caused by artificial/chemical ingredients & preservatives from food sources. These are undigestable materials. The body's course of action with undigestables is to store it until such time that it is given a means/knowing to do so. The usual storage is in fat cells, but many chems & metal-yielding ingredients (art. colors contain aluminum) seem to concentrate their storage at the base of the brain & muscle tissues, while other preservatives, sweeteners, & toxins are placed into joint & spinal cartilage....you can just imagine the created line of consequences.
Add to this scenario, the chems & toxic compounds in air fresheners & cleaners, laundry & hygiene products, and your body & home become places OSHA would condemn in a heartbeat.(OSHA is the main regulator of job safety--building codes, toxic handling, etc. in the work place).
3. I did a personal survey in a 3 block radius around our home...I found that out of the 12 boys in that area, 8 were on Ritilin...2 of the 12 were mine, 1 had other heavy challenges, & the other was my best friend's son, who also knew better...7 of the 8 boys had moms on Prozac or Oxicotin. A banner sales streak by medical groups & their pharm. providers!
Needless to say, I went home with a box of construction garbage bags & proceded, kids at hand & helping, to read every label of every item in my pantry & fridge...if it contained artifical anything--garbage! If it had nitrites/sulfites--garbage!, petroleum by-products--garbage! If 3 or more of the first 5 ingreds. were refined sugars--garbage! Let's just say that all around, it was an expensibe lesson learned. But sooo glad I did it!!!
I backed up my nutritional changes with an herbal elixir that is used during times of stress (i.e. teething, colic, death, new home, etc.) I make my own, but you can get similar through herbalhealer.com.
2 weeks after this ordeal, I got a call from the school nurse because she needed the prescript info from his Ritilin & his schedule of dosage. When I retorted that there was no info to give, she was floored...seems he had done a big 180 in that 2 weeks time...focus immediately improved, self control was evident--no more "restless leg syndrome", & he just seemed happier & calmer...You can bet I was doing the "Happy Dance" after that call!!!
Sooo, Sweetness...ask & you shall receive!!! Make a wiser lifestyle--make a wiser, healthier you...Good Journey!!!

Its definitely hardwired into you... and me... for that matter.
also, I think everyone has some degree of it... that one really long answer is completely right. The chemicals that we ingest and call food do so much harm to us, it's not even funny.
That said, I still eat too much of that artificial crap, cause it tastes good. which is a bad idea. I don't recommend it.

Food additives may be a possible cause. You may want to avoid eating foods that contain preservatives or food additives altogether. Check the news here
