absolutely nothing! you know why? cuz they dont even LOOK at the receipt, they quickly mark it with a highlighter. I actually had to stand in a line to leave, because one lady was marking the receipts. WTF? she didnt even look at the receipt! what a waste of time.

Because it has been known for people to come into Wal-Mart with a few concealed Wal-Mart sacks which they proceed to stuff with merchandise, place in their cart, and attempt to walk out. Because the stuff is in the sacks it looks as if they have passed through the checkout when they haven't. It surprises me that they could actually do this without anybody spotting them long before they head for the exit, but there are some very bold people and some of them still manage to pull it off. Somebody just checking your receipt verifies that you actually have gone through checkout.
They have done that pretty much every time we have ever bought a large boxed item - like a t.v. set for example. You might be surprised how many people have tried wheeling something enormous right out of the store LOL.

if you have large items, or items on the bottom of your basket not in bags,, they are checking to be sure they are paid for. Wal-Mart has the highest shoplifting among retail stores. This is a way to try to stop some of it. It is not just aimed at you. I just keep my receipt in hand till I get to the car.

The stated purpose is to check to see if the checkers made any mistakes such as charging you twice (or not at all). They do the same thing at Costco. I have never seen it done at Wal-Mart so maybe it is just in certain areas.
They never tell you the true purpose.

To cut down on shoplifting. They do the same thing at their sister store - Sam's Club. They look at the total number of items on the receipt, and count the number of items in your bag, and if it does not match then clearly you stole something or the cashier 'forgot' to put something in your bag.

They're checking to make sure you didn't shoplift anything. Even though they don't necessarily check your items very carefully, just having a person to check at the door will deter some potential shoplifters.

They don't trust people. Walmart is a hotbed of shoplifting.
When they stuck a new one in around here, there were all kinds of crimes. The town claimed with the extra tax money from a new store, the taxes would be lowered. HA! What happened is, the taxes went UP! Why? They now have to pay for all the police overtime. That's for real.

Just to give the impression that they are checking to make sure that everything in your bag has been paid for. An old trick is to pay for a bunch of things, then walk back into the store and throw a few more items in the bag.

The intimation is that _you_ have stolen something from Walmart and they want to prove it.
I find this policy to be insulting. It's probably necessary seeing the type of business that Walmart attracts, but it's insulting none the less.
