Flea collars usually only work around the neck area. They don't really protect the rest of the pet. You do have to worry about the type of chemicals used in making these collars....they can be very irritating and dangerous to your pet. Talk to you vet about flea preventative like advantage. I know that it is expensive, but well worth it in the long run.

The collar is treated with a flea preventative poison. The idea was, if the poison is put into a collar that will be around the dogs' neck, the fleas will come into contact with it and die or leave. They frequently 'nest' or lay their eggs around a dogs' neck area.
The bad things about flea collars, they don't work very effeciently. Many dogs have had a reaction to the poison in the collar and developed rashes, lost the hair around the neck, got infections. Also, the dosage if often too high for some dogs. When on a dog, other dogs have been known to grab the collar in their mouth when playing and giving them a large dose of poison, never a good thing. Then there were the dogs that suffered greatly, some even died due to ignorance on the owners part. The collars come in a very long length. The idea being, one size fits all with a pair of scissors to cut it down for your smaller dogs necks. Well, people actually would wrap the collar around a small dogs' neck twice and the dog would actually die from poisoning.
Steer away from flea collars. The new method of the flea preventative being applied in a line between the dogs' shoulder blades along the spine is the best. Usually, the best products for this are those sold by your Vet. Many of the ones on the shelves in the pet supply stores just are not as good as those your Vet can offer you.

It doesn't work very well at all - it uses chemicals which can harm the animal and doesn't protect against fleas except the area it is around.
The only thing that prevents fleas is a topical liquid - Frontline, Advantage, Advantix, etc.,
applied every single month to the back of the dog or cat's neck. This breaks the cycle of fleas, larvae and eggs and really works.

My opinion/experience is that they don't work.
I'd talk to my vet and get a prescription flea preventative. In the long run, it costs less money and you won't have fleas in the house.
