The papacy never said that. Protestant churches are valid paths to salvation. They are 'flawed', and the Catholic Church is the closest to God's will, but it is not the only way by any means. Here is what the text (translated) reads:
The Christian communities separated from the Catholic Church, the CDF continues, "though we believe they suffer from defects, are deprived neither of significance nor importance in the mystery of salvation." These communities can act as instruments of salvation, because of their partial participation in "that fullness of grace and of truth which has been entrusted to the Catholic Church."

The Pope never said anything of the sort.
What he (the Pope) said was the same thing that the church has been saying for roughly 2,000 years - the Catholic church is the one and only church founded by Jesus Christ on the rock which is Peter.
The Pope has said some un-PC things and has stepped on some toes by being blunt but he never said Protestant churches are "useless for salvation."

The "papacy" said no such thing. The Pope stated that such churches lack the fullness of truth and the sacraments which are the principle channels of grace Christ provided. Both statements are clearly true. He also stated that those who belong to such churches CAN be saved. None of these statements are new ideas. They are all clearly stated in the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
Also, it has nothing to do with the fact that the Catholic Church was "first". It has everything to do with the fact that Jesus Christ established ONE Church for all mankind, said that all men were to belong to that ONE Church, and never authorized the founding of any other churches in His name, let alone a manmade tradition of thousands of denominations that cannot agree among themselves on a single doctrtinal truth.

No, the Vatican did not say this at all. Here is a link to the latest Vatican document on the subject: http://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/congregations/cfaith/documents/rc_con_cfaith_doc_20070629_responsa-quaestiones_en.html
Copying and pasting from teh document:
“It follows that these separated churches and Communities, though we believe they suffer from defects, are deprived neither of significance nor importance in the mystery of salvation. In fact the Spirit of Christ has not refrained from using them as instruments of salvation, whose value derives from that fullness of grace and of truth which has been entrusted to the Catholic Church”

I don't think that is true. If it is, then, it is their self righteous judging. And it isn't a truth from God.
Everyone born of God is sealed with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is with the child of God & will fill the child of God. 1Jn2:27.
Peter isn't the Church Foundation. God given faith that Jesus Christ, the Son of the Living God is the Church Foundation. Peter is a Piece of the Rock. All of the Names of the 12 Disciples are in the Foundation.

I know, they keep saying they are part of St Peter's early church.
Tell me, the early church was persecuted unto death by the world, funny how the Catholic church is famous for persecuting the world instead of the other way around. Torturing people into false confessions, burning them alive at the stake...
no, the catholic church can say all they want to say, but they are no more descendant of the church Peter was part of than Lucifer is.

A lot of bovine excrement comes out of the Vatican. Peter, along with the apostles, received the Holy Spirit, and all those who were chosen out for salvation after that. Catholicism didn't start till after 300 ad. Peter was never in Rome and was not the first pope. Salvation does not come through the rcc, only through Christ alone, by grace, through faith.

Well, I'm no fan of the Catholic church but the pope didn't say that. Newspaper reporters are notorious for twisting facts to make stories more dramatic.

The Scripture calls Jesus Christ the only mediator between God and men.
And btw, Peter was imprisoned under Nero and executed in Rome, A.D.67 or 68.
