The Americans in Mexico are rarely the victims of police misconduct. The towns where retirees live are used to American & Europeans and cater to them greatly. San Miguel de Allende is full of Americans, as are many other cities. San Miguel has cobblestone streets, and, the coolest church!
If you don't speak Spanish, I wouldn't try and live in areas where there aren't lots of English speakers (obviously). Mexico is great fun, and, great food....

I know of several who was talked into buying property over in Mexico to retire on. Remember the best way to make money is hold someone who has money for ransom.
They lost all their money when a very corrupt govenment said, we own everything and they had no authority to sell anything to you and took the property back and they did not get reinbursed. They lost 100,000 dollars. They is many similar stories. If you go rent a place cheap and get cheap labor.
But it is worst crime than the worst Getto in the USA.
So it is a very dangerous over there. But never try to buy land. Condo's or villas. That is a joke to many have been fleeced doing. So just rent and have your money sent a little at a time. For me that is the last place I would retire to.
I would trust Cuba more than Mexico.

Mexico, like USA and every other country, has safe and unsafe areas. As far as hotels, check the link below. As for hospitals, depends what area you are looking at, so I can't give you a specific answer for that.

I have heard great things about retiring in Mexico. I have a friend who is Mexican american. Born here but parents from Mexico. He is going to finish sschool here and start working and at the same time have a custom home built in Mexico and by the time that home is built he will move to Mexico and retire and live good the rest of his time. Idk I have seen the picture of where he is from and its beautiful. Its the state of Michoacan. I dont know about how safe it is or isnt but I know its beautiful there.

Stay away from Mexcio City and Nuevo Laredo if you value your life. I think the State department even advises against visiting Mexico.

Like anyplace there are very safe places and others where you might never make it out of. Baja( far from the border) is a very nice place.
