Great use they have, when in the hands
Of one like me, who understands,
Who understands the time and place,
The person, manner, and the grace,
Which fools neglect; so that we find,
If all the requisites are join'd,
From whence a perfect joke must spring,
A joke's a very serious thing.
Charles Churchill, "The Ghost", 1762

They say humor is truth that we hadn't thought of before. That's the closest I've heard to a definition. Humor can point out fallacies, sometimes with less pain. And sometimes the best truths are put poetically, maybe we should add humorously also. Beauty is truth, truth beauty. If it can be put beautifully it seems more accurate or at least more memorable. A joke can go around the world while truth is still stuck in the throught. Humor seems to come from intuition and any intuitive will tell you that the intuition is always right. If it's not, it was your attempt at thinking. A quote from the New York Times science section said that the conscious mind is like a monkey on the back of a tiger. Science says. Nana nana na na.

Are you referring to the English poet? I think he was trying to say that humor is indeed important in coping with life.

I'd like a little more context before I dismiss it outright.
