I have a dental bill that I've been fighting with the dentist and my benefits to cover. Neither one claims to cover the service or offer a resolution. Its now gone to collections and I've received a letter stating it will come out of my payroll check. Is this possible for a dental bill? I thought only federal loans, etc can be taken out of payroll checks, not medical/dental claims.

(I'm assuming you meant "without my authorization")

The answer depends on your state. In some states, wages can be garnished to satisfy any judgment, but in other states it is only for certain judgments like child support. Because you were sent a letter, it is likely (although not certain) that you are in one of the former states. I'm assuming that a collector would not intentionally put a false statement of the law in writing. In short, you will need to talk to lawyer familiar with your state's law.

It's possible that they can garnish your wages to get the money, if they have a court judgement against you.

It's TAX REFUNDS that only government obligations, child support and school loans can be taken from. You wages can be garnished for pretty much any debt the courts issue a judgement for.

Any debt that you owe and become delinquent on can be turned over to collections and your check can be garnished.
