I used to suffer from this a few years ago. Being a single parent at the time with a child fighting cancer, believe me, your mind is constantly busy. I tried a relaxing technique that I had read about. This is what you do.....
If you can find a CD with some soft music, something instrumental without the words. One of those nature CDs would work.
Then take a deep breath through your nose and let it out through your mouth. Do this two of three times as you lay down to go to sleep.
As you lay there try to clear the days events from your mind. Then think of a lovely thought. I used to think about or try to picture in my mind a sunny meadow with lots of flowers and butterflies. Something like that.
After a few nights of doing this, I was a lot better when it came to getting to sleep.

Start making lists. Right before you go to bed, make a list of everything you need to do tomorrow or for the week. This will put your mind at ease because you know you will remember it for the next day. I used to have the same problem and the lists really helped.
Also, when I start to regress and think of other problems I have, I think of something else really boring. Like grass. Just say the word -- grass, grass, grass over and over in your mind or any word you like and focus on it. It will bore you to sleep.

If it's excessive mental activity that keeps you awake, all a over-the-counter sleeping pill will make you more exhausted. You'll still have just as much on your mind. Talk to your doctor about a medication that will calm you down mentally before bed, such as a low dose benzodiazepine, such as valium.
You may also want to avoid doing activity that promotes deep thought right before bed, ie. don't watch TV or browse the internet before going to bed.

I have that problem but it relates to my bipolar and OCD and insomnia (Yes I know I'm a mess)
I do take sonata which is a really great one. It's about medium in the addiction range and metabolizes in four hours so you don't have the hang over feeling.
I usually only take that though when I HAVE to. Try learning to meditate. It's an excersize in clearing the mind and shutting it down. It can help too.

The artificial light from the computer screen (and even your phone) can reduce melatonin (the sleep hormone) production in your body. Try taking a melatonin suppliment. I take 1mg melatonin on nights that I can't sleep and it works like a charm! The only downfall to taking melatonin is that if you take it every night your body will get used to it and you will have to increase how much you take. I try to only take it occasionally. I also love hot tea containing camomile to help me relax. Sleepy Time Tea with honey is wonderful. :)

I know how you feel. I used to use over the counter sleeping pills. They're low dose, just don't use them everynight.
