they did on a smaller scale.main difference was the lack of faction fighting.Die hards continued with sabotage and assassination of allied forces for about 5 years.Dwindled after that because the majority of the German people wanted to move on.

The Germans did attack us troops. When the US troops captured them they were put on trail, found guilty, and executed by firing squad. In occupied areas of Germany before the war ended the US would execute German POWs for reprisals. During the war US would also pull out of village if the experience sniper fire from it,then they would shell the village all night, and reoccupy it in the morning.
In Japan the Emperor said the war was over and not to fight the Americans. All his loyal soldiers did just that and a peaceful occupation occurred.
South Korea seems to be a thriving nation. They went from a rural oppressed nation to a major industrial power. While in the north the still use the power lines the Japanese put in before the war and thousands starve to death.
Maybe if we treated insurgent the same way we treated Germans the post war occupation of Iraq would have went better.

You've demonstrated that you clearly don't know what you're talking about. Post World War II Germany - had a number of issues within its population; The Werwolves (Nazis SS Trained terrorists) were the insurgents of their day. In additional you could very easily run afoul of the German criminal element who husbanded the Black Market. The U.S. lost thousands of troops after the victory was won in Europe.
The situation in Japan following the surrender was no better and a large number of native Americans died thinking peace meant security from harm.
The media, defeatist democrats and the anti-war movement forced us to quit the Vietnam War in 1975. The Peace Loving People of North Vietnam proceed to kill another four million people in Southeast Asia before they finally decided to settle down nearly ten years later. I suppose they needed all those bones to help build the foundation of the new peaceful country.....

Your question bears no resemblance to the two situations:
1. the German people were part of the Fascist 3 Reich, their men served in the military service of that country, the civilians in the factory's to make war supplies. And the fought till it was realized they had no chance to win facing an enemy closing in from two fronts.
2. The situation in Iraq is far from that, most of the people have no connection to the Insurgents, have not been actively involved in making weapons for the war effort, most are innocent civilians, so there are no legitimate or moral grounds for turning the full weight of American firepower loose on the country.
For the attention of Madmonk:
The Buddhists played no part in the Vietnamese War other than to protest against WAR in General, the North Vietnamese were Communist your reference to Buddhist's is way off the mark and shows your ignorance.

Comparing Germans to Iraqis is like comparing apples to oranges; the circumstances of both wars were different as were the religions, cultures and values of the populations there.

The Germans (Christians) knew when they were defeated ; the Vietnamese (Buddhists) and Iraqis (Muslims) apparently do not understand the concept of defeat. They do though know the concept of how to address being invaded by throwing everything at the invader, including their bodies.
conranger1: Huh? The dominant faith in Vietnam is Buddhism and you cannot surely mean in your swipe at me that all Buddhists are monks. I expect those symbols and talismans of the Viet soldiers of the north representing their spiritual being far outnumbered any hammer and sickle pendants that they might have been wearing.

So actually what you are saying is that we should have bombed all the cities in Iraq to rubble and then firebombed a few million people to death so that the insurgents wouldn't want to mess with us. I agree, but it is too late now.
