2 kings chapter 2 verse 23 to 25.
Let me get this straight:
42 kids mock your holy man.
So what does your holy man do???
He curses them in the name of god.
Then to add insult to injury, god sends a bear to kill all the children.
Wow, what a godly little story to tell your children.
Now listen up kids:
if you mock a man of god, he will curse you and god will send a bear to eat you alive.
Now tell me Christians, do you still believe the buybull is the inerrant word of god?
you Christians should be ashamed of yourselves!
How can you approve the killing of children.
Oh, one more thing, if god is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow, then why, oh, why do you not kill children who curse ministers?
UHHHH, thought so.

What happens in the Old Testament is concerning the laws of the Hebrews BEFORE God sent Jesus to open salvation to EVERYONE. The old laws forbade the gentiles from worshiping the GOD OF THE HEBREWS. When Jesus taught He taught the doctrine of Christianity and new laws were laid down.

I teach an ethics class for youth at my church. I include the story of Elisha, dead children and all, when I teach respect for others, not just spiritual leaders. God is eternal-and has the right to change his mind-which does make me wonder if He may not be a She. I am not saying the verses are perfect, they were written by man (assumable with inspiration from God) and in the numerous translations could be changed. I am saying that one should take the ENTIRE bible in the context that it was written. To do that you must have an understanding of the difference between the two books-Old and New Testament.
By the way-bears eat cynics too.

Maybe you haven't read the full scriptures well but God loves Children. Read the whole Bible and you will find out. And We do not approve of killing children did you ask a Christian because that isn't what we do in our religion. We preach peace and Love. The new testament explains more on that. a lot of things changed after the New testament and you would need to read it to find out. We do not kill Children in General I don't know how many stories you know about Christians killing Children. I think you need to do more study and research on the matter before you go out calling Christians Killers because we are not and Not all of us believe that what Bush is doing is Good and not all of us are pro war. In fact a large majority isn't and We are pro life and do not like abortion for that reason because it is murder. maybe you should ask before going into ridiculous assumptions.

Preachers don't get up and preach that story.

mrglass08's response is the typicall apologetic nonsense offered for this story. There's nothing in the story that indicates the boys were actually men, or that they made any threat whatsoever. The proper translation shows it clearly is just a case of disrespect toward Elisha, and nothing more, to which Elisha used his magic wand to summon a bear to shred them to pieces.

and they said children cannot be held for accountability

-selective disinformation

edit :

mrglass , if they say children refers to late teens , they would have to use babies if they want to indicate children and foetus for babies?

why not instead of guiding them or teaching them the right stuff , he just kill them with a bear to save the troubles?

edit :

That Person,
'The new testament explains more on that. a lot of things changed after the New testament .

i was told by many christians , mostly fundies , that god doesnt change. therefore if the same situation were to happen again , i am quite sure the god who doesnt change will still punish children the same way

Remember that his master, Elijah had just been 'taken up', into heaven, and that is how Elishah came to be the head of the School of the Prophets.

So the taunt "Go up, thou bald head," wasn't about Elishah's hairline, but about Yahweh's prophetic movement itself. They were telling Elishah to "fly away" too; they wanted to be rid of God's governance over them.

That is when Elishah 'cursed them in the Name of the Lord, and two she bears came from the woods and tare 42 of them.....'

As I recall, for the duration of the trip, he was not plagued by hecklers!

It is not for US to kill them, that is God's job if He so chooses. That story also shows how seriously He is offended by those who show disrespect to his ministers. Youth is no excuse for unkind words to a man of God. The lesson? Don't get caught up in the merrymaking of this world, it might lead you to ruin; and, teach your children to respect the things of God.

When it says children it means late teens. And if by making fun of him you mean threatening his life, to send him up to meet Elijah means they are going to kill him. So basically in modern English a large gang meet the prophet and threatened to kill him so God protected his man by sending in a bear to deal with them.

To the person below me who said my response was apologetic nonsense: any reason I could give would be nonsense to you because you have already made up your mind haven't you? The scripture clearly states that they were telling him "Go on up, you bald head" which means emulate your predecessor and go on up to heaven. Just because you do not see it as a threat does not mean that is not what it was. Also the scripture says youths, not kids, and there were 42 of them which is quite a crowd and very threatening. So there were really 42 youths, ie young men 16-25, who were telling him to die. Is that not a threat to him that needs to be dealt with? Would you just let them kill you? I think not, you would defend yourself and be justified in doing so.

Huh If I were you I wouldn't mock Christians the way you are doing
A worse fate will happen to you than what happened to the 42 kids that mocked a Prophet of God

They pick and choose what parts of the BuyBull they want to believe. And the ministers don't tell the bad stories.

If you truly believe that it happened just as it is written, is it not a foolish thing to continue to mock God?

If you do not believe, then why concern yourself with it?

God continues to be merciful in spite of your hatred of Him.

God bless you.
