About six months ago, a gentleman named Akbar moved next door with his wife and children. Obviously, with his name, I was petrified. After everything that has happened in Madrid, NY and London, I was scared for my family.
So I would not allow my children to be outside without my direct supervision, and often I would end up walking the long way to my car just to not walk by Akbar's place.
Last Monday, he was walking down the sidewalk and caught up to me when I started running. Guess what? It turns out he is a Mormon!!!!! Crazy!
I was so relieved. I seriously thought my family was in serious jeopardy! Now I have a new best friend! I've introduced him into my country club, and have given him a key to our house in case of an emergency. It's also good to have some help in the babysitting department when me and the little woman go to church.
I'm just telling you this story to let you know they aren't all bad.

God bless the Mormons! They are strange but very affectionate creatures...and very obediant!
Thank God he prays to Joseph Smith and not Allah!

I don't think I understood your question.
I have been surprised and impressed by someone's religion, meaning by someone living their religion.
I am LDS (Mormon like you mentioned), and recieve and participate in service at times. One example, my ward (my congregation) took care of my family while I was in a coma in a hospital, for over a month's time. They provided meals for my family, so my parents could be at my bedside and with me in rehab, although I hardly remember that. My family also recieved service at the hands of the Catholics in the neighborhood.
I know that when people actually live their religion, it is a pleasant surprise to see how good people can be.

So sad you couldn't be friends with someone becasue of their religion. I had a Muslim friend in school, many Jewish friends at a camp I attended every year, and most of my friends now are Christian or Atheist.
I am none of the above, but would gladly invite any of them over, or go out with them as friends.

The first time I went to an LDS church, I was pleasantly surprised that no one passed the plate.

I think it's pretty sad that the man's name was enough to frighten you so badly. Get to know people before changing your walk route just to avoid their home. But hey, now you know more about him.

Yeah, there aren't any Christian terrorists. Eric Rudolph and Timothy McVeigh didn't exist or they weren't "True Christians" (TM) And all those abortion clinics and gay bars blew themselves up.

Strange, having in mind that religion's long racist history.

Please tell me you came up with this on your own and didn't cut and paste it from somewhere. I'll be really happy to discover that there's real wit on YA.
