Kids can begin lifting weights early in life but the biggest concern is HEAVY weights. Since kids are still growing, lifting very heavy weights can cause damage to their growth plates and lead to bone and joint problems later in life. The best thing to do would be to stick with the basics like push-ups and pull-ups and other exercises with little to no weight or use resistance bands versus actual free weights.

You should consult your doctor. People beginning any exercise regimen should always seek medical advice to ensure they are healthy enough to exercise. Past that, any age can lift weights, providing you lift an appropriate amount for your frame/age/health. Don't go into it like most and try to bench 300 lbs. You'll end up getting hurt and taking more time off to recover the blown muscles. Start with really light weights and do more reps with those weights. Increase as you feel you're building strength. Take a look at some trusted health websites for recommendations for people just starting with weights, then remember that you're still young and your muscles may not be fully developed yet. You may not have the strength of someone who's five years older than you, so remember to be smart about it. You're on a good track by wanting to work out...just don't over-do it! Good luck!

When they're capable of understanding the rules and guidelines to maintain proper safety for themselves and those around them.. It really depends on how mature they are mentally..
If they can be responsible and not joke around with the weights, then they can begin at very young ages.. However, many children like to horse around and play superman or other goofing off without realizing how much damage and pain they can put themselves or others in if they cause an accident.. Crushed toes, twisted wrists, etc. can happen to adults who aren't paying attention..
For this reason, most people do not allow children to do any weight lifting until they're older unless they have a dedicated trainer and spotter every second to watch over them.

I lifted weights starting a 8 years old because I was in a sport that required this of me. I don't think you can harm yourself by lifting weights (as long as they aren't too heavy for you) and you do them safely (Don't drop them on yourself! I learned that the hard way!)... start with small weights 5-10 pounds (my 12-14 I was using 12-15) and work up.

last year i attended leisure industry week while there i came across a stand selling children's multi-gyms and treadmills for children as young as five, it is safe for children to work out but weight lifting is very dangerous for children as their bones are not fully developed therefore they need to supervised so they don't lift weights they can't handle
