Based on a general, non-denominational, non-interpretive, reading of the text of Jeremiah 31:31-34, the following points are discernible:
* The New Covenant is established by God himself.[4]
* The New Covenant is made with the "house of Israel" and the "house of Judah".[5]
* The New Covenant is not like the broken covenant made with Moses at Mount Sinai.
o Unlike the broken covenant (Jer 11), the New Covenant is kept by its members.[6]
* Characteristics of the members of the New Covenant:[7]
o The law of God is written in their thinking and their affections.
o The LORD, i.e. YHVH, will be their God, and they will be his people.[8]
o Every single member of the New Covenant "knows the LORD" in an intimate way.[9]
o The sins of the members of the New Covenant are forgiven by God, and will never be recalled.
Does "intimate way" include "raised as" or "born"? Does it include what your parents believe?

There is more to the New covenant. Gentiles were grafted into the new covenant, the covenant was made between God and His people, but He swore to it by Himself. We see an example of this in Genesis 15, the covenant He swore with Abraham, was with God alone, Abraham did not do anything to ratify it nor had to do anything to bring it about, it would be done by God. God knows who are His, intimately, as a father knows his child. It is also an individual covenant with believers, whether our parents believed or not does not enter into it.

In my mind, I always thought a true christian should follow the teachings of christ rather than the other nonsense put forth in the bible.
Isn't that what christian ultimately means? Follower of christ? However most people don't follow the teachings of christ they just go along with what other 'christians' are doing.
If christians truly followed what christ taught then they wouldn't be such a bad lot of people.

you forgot, " And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the L-RD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the L-RD", from verse 34...
as long as they keep teaching and preaching, claiming that people still need to be taught, the new covenant isn't here.
christianity is NOT the new covenant!

A Christian is a Christian because he or she believes in Jesus Christ. Trust is the issue.
Trust = Faith.
They are synonymous.
Jesus lined it out for us in John 3, where he said that simple trust is what we need to do in order to be saved. A Christian will believe this.

"Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
"Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born?
"Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
"That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
"Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
"The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
BEING BORN AGAIN IS BEING A CHRISTIAN. YOU MUST CONFESS YOUR SIN, ASK CHRIST INTO YOUR HEART AND LIFE AND LIVE ACCORDING TO HIS TEACHINGS IN ORDER TO BE A CHRISTIAN. IT'S THAT EASY. FREEDOM IN CHRIST.
