I'm quite sure that I would not want to follow a god that lead me to believe that I needed to sacrifice my child. I can not imagine any loving parent asking their child to sacrifice their child - i.e. grandparent says "If you love me kill your son, my grandson".
How can this be not viewed as sadistic?? What kind of faith can justify this?

Abraham had compleat confidence(Faith) in God that God would keep His word and that a great Nation would come from Isac... If God was requireing that Isac be sacrificed then that was part of God's plan and was to be done... His Faith, and the Faith of his son, was what was required, as an example to those to follow... When that Faith was fully demonstrated, God recorded it for all generations... that was God's purpose in that testing of Abraham and his son ...
Would God demand that such an act be fully carried out... yes... was the act fully carried out...yes it was... God knows the heart(mind) of every one... God knew that Abraham was fully commited to doing as God required... God knew that the knife was on its way to carrying out the Sacrifice... there was no turning back for Abraham or for his son.. the full commitment was made... no man could have stopped it... only God himself was able to stay The Sacrifice...
When It came time for God To make The Final Sacrifice... no man could stop it and The Son went willingly to The Sacrifice... knowing full well that no hand would stay it... And The Price was paid for all of mankind... for all time... and no further sacrifices are required and no other payment can be made...

God wouldn't have let that happen. He's all powerful & would have stopped it. And no, I don't think it was sadistic at all. He knew that the son would never die, he was testing Abraham's faith.
You're question is a poor one because if you believe this situation actually happened then most likely you believe in an all powerful, all knowing God who can control the situation as well. ie. he would never let Abraham actually kill his son.

God would not have asked Abraham to do this unless he knew Abraham would know his voice and obey him.
When God picked Abraham to be the Father of the faith he wanted to show man, that God did not want child sacrifices as were common among some of the pagan faiths.
So never never never should a child or a person or even an animal be sacrificed to God. The only acceptable sacrifice is that of Jesus, and your constant love.

Chippy this is not only a test but a prophesy.
Abraham tells Issac before they get ot the place of sacrifice that God will provide himself a lamb.
The Bible tell us God says to Abraham take your only son, God is well aware that Abraham has more than one son but only one son of the promise and this refers to God's only begotten son.
Issac carries the wood for the sacrifice as Christ carries the wood.
They travel 3 days as Christ was in the grave 3 days.
Abraham knows God's promise is through Issac and believes that God will fufill what God has promised.
God provides a ram to be sacrifice and still Abraham calls the place Jehova-jireh because he said this is the place where the lord would provide himself a lamb.
The lamb of God is Jesus and is prophesied by Abraham, Moses, David, Isaiah and anounced by John the Baptist and God himself.

God would never have let it happen and do you really believe that if Abraham had that kind of faith in God he believed God would really make him do it, or that he wasn't listening for God's voice with every fiber of his being? God had already brought the replacement to the hillside before they even got there. Though Abraham didn't know that, I'm sure he new that if God had promised him a son in his old age and that son would be the leader of a great nation then he knew also that God would not allow him to kill his son. God was testing his faith and he knew it and had faith that God's word would be kept.

The first part of your question doesn't bug me too much -- if God wanted Abraham's son to live, he would have stopped Abraham.
That last question (about if it was sadistic) is a question that has bugged me for quite a while now. And to bring it into present day...imagine a father killing his son, and trying to justify it by saying "God told me to." He would either be in a psych ward or death row.

God knew what he would do all along. Because Isaac was the seed that would eventually lead to the Messiah, there is no way God would have allowed Abraham to kill him.
It was a test of Abraham's faith, but more than that it prefigured Jehovah God's willingness to sacrifice his son on behalf of mankind and Jesus' willingness to be that sacrifice.

When you are intune with God, it is impossible to miss his voice, and I think It is a beautiful story, Abraham was a wonderful man of God, and I am sure he got a star on his crown for his obediance to the Lord, there have not been many like him before or after Aberham, Besides Heaven is a paradise, to great to even imagine, do you think God just would let anyone in, he test his children, just like we reward our children when they mind us, God does the same, It is not always easy, but the reward is worth it

The Bible must be a series of metaphores written by and for the people of the time (2000 years ago), either that or God is a pretty nasty piece of work and certainly shouldn't be worshipped. Context is important and the Bible was never meant as fact.
