if they start asking for money, look elsewhere. a real mentor is in it for the love of it, not the money.

A mentor can usually help you navigate the muddy waters of the dreadful Wiccan book market.

Also, a mentor who teaches within a tradition can also give you a powerful scaffold around which to build your own system.

For example, a certain author who shall remain nameless teaches that you should never lie, but then tells kids how to misdirect their parents. A good mentor's teachings DO NOT CONTRADICT EACH OTHER, because they are part of a complete, living, breathing system.

Sometimes they may be partially contradictory, but the teacher will be able to explain how s/he resolved that issue.

Also, a mentor is going to help you if you're WAY off. If, for example, you think "an it harm none, do as you will" means harm none, a mentor's going to help you before you deal with things like "how can I eat without killing a potential apple tree?"

I was young when I got my first mentor, but I was a special case. My youngest student, with the exception of my son who occassionally wants to know stuff, was 18.

Today I pretty much only teach advanced students. Ahhhh...luxury.

Do not give anybody your money. Do not give out your phone number, address, real name, or any other information that could identify you, such the town you live in combined with your place of employment or a team you're on.

On to the question you actually asked: Wicca was originally a very specific name for a very new religion one guy (Gerald Gardner) built out of three old religions. He used to be able to control and supervise the training of every new Wiccan himself. That means they had a learning resource, somebody to guide them; it also means that every Wiccan learned their religion Gardner's way. These days, Wicca is more loosely defined. Many Wiccans learn and practice without ever having MET another Wiccan.

It's a matter of individual choice whether you want somebody to guide you or whether you want to figure it all out yourself. Personally, I think you should spend more time connecting to the world around you by learning to understand politics, money, and the sciences. Superstition is superstition, no matter what symbol it hides behind.

And don't buy into any of the b.s. about "falling to the dark side" or "spiritual warfare." That's just ego-fluffing nonsense for people whose lives are so dull that they have to believe they live in a comic book. There is no "cosmic battle between good and evil," there's just the world, our lives, and the choices we make. Good luck.

This is what I believe regarding the hell thing. When we cross over, we watch and feel our past life here. We feel the pain which we have caused, and the pain this has caused others, and so on, like ripples in water. Now, think of Hitler, of mass murderers, of mass rapists...etc. Now, there's some incredible, unspeakable pain. Which was completely avoidable. Can you really think of a worse hell? Also, it’s from the God with many names and many faces, so it has purpose. Not only does it teach, but it is custom made for each of us. It’s not just some mindless thrust of some sinner into the same hell over and over. There are only a couple of rules to escape hell to unconditionally love for all others, including ourselves, and do what you will, but harm no one. It’s that simple, and that hard. We need to stop listening to a flawed Bible, sucking it all down without discretion. Anyone who knows the Bible’s history should be aware that it’s been messed with over and over. It just gives my God human limitations!
Blessed Be

Many books on Wicca are flawed. A mentor's knowledge often comes from prior generations, and it is best to learn from such a mentor than many of the books, particularly those found and larger chain stores (Barnes & Noble, etc.).

The significance of having a mentor is that they will lead you away from the light of the truth more quickly than not having one would.

Give it up!

Repent and believe in the Gospel!

A teacher....well teaches you. Sort of self explanitory. But the "net" isn't the place to find one. When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.
Cryptic I know but very true.
edit: When I say net, it's not to say someone you meet on the net won't become a mentor or teacher. I mean posting "wanted ads"

Well, for one, it's easier to learn from a mentor. You can't exactly ask you books questions or get their opinions, lol.

And it builds a support base and a community to have a mentor. Makes it easier to get through difficult times, keeps you motivated to learn, etc.

no longer that i've got faith in those issues, yet .... Do you have any Wiccan e book/supply shops on your area? if so, ask them what you're searching for for and that they are going to be chuffed to point you interior the acceptable course. then you could fairly meet with actual people who've comparable pastimes. rather of a some disembodied digital mail replace.

if you put 3 or 4 mentors in a big bottle of diet coke you can make a rocket.

It's very important to have someone train you, especially if you're a beginner. They basically are there to get your feet wet, and eventually you'll require less and less supervision, and eventually you can become a priest(ess) without their help.

Of course, if you're a solitary Pagan, then you go at your own pace. Remember the year and a day rule, though.
