There has been an incident around here involving a cell phone and fire. The person was pumping gas and the phone went off. It was a freak accident, but; it can happen none the less. It would seem as though they would post a sign instead of using a speaker all the time. The sign should also read, put your cigarettes out! Its incredible how dumb some people can be!

Anyone who says cell phone use does not constitute a risk when fuelling a car with petrol is talking nonsense. There are a number of staff training videos showing incidents recorded by forecourt surveillance cameras. People should not spread dangerous rumours about safety matters that they clearly know nothing about.

Perhaps it is an over zealous safety precaution but petrol vapor is extremely volatile.
In this video which many may have seen before doing the e-mail rounds it appears to be static from the womans jumper that ignites the vapour

Is it worth the risk for the sake of holding on for a minute?

Not sure if the "sue everybody for everything" sensation has hit the UK but here (U.S.), you have to protect yourself against every possibility no matter how slim. getting in and out of the vehicle while fueling is much more dangerous than a cell phone.

This reminds me, a few years ago at the Texaco in Penkridge, Staffordshire my dad and I were filling up and the guy in the car next to us had his phone out and the man in the shop came out and shouted at him! There are warnings all over the gas pumps so imagine people don't take notice or think they know better.

It is a myth, a result of over-reaction from the health and safety brigade.
Here is a link to the Brainiac Science Abuse programme that tests it (youtube clip):

Go over there after they close and cut the wires to the speaker.
Wear a mask so you dont get caught.
Wear gloves so no prints are left behind
You will never hear that stupid voice again.
Most fires at gas stations are caused from
hot exhaust
cigarettes
static from getting in and out of the car
I've never heard of a cell phone causing a fire

This is bull. A cell phone can not set off a fire in a gas station. This is a myth that has gone on for to long.

Brainiac science abuse did an experiment where they put 6 mobile phones in a caravan and doused it in petrol.
They rung them all at once and guess what happened?
Nothing.
