I was wondering if people realize how idiotic it makes them look when they give a thumb's down to a correct answer. It is pretty obvious that certain groups are poo-pooing answers just because it's not the side they are on. Is it really that hard to just ignore an answer you don't like instead of acting as though it is false information?

Standing ovation!!!!!!!

Apparently it is. Although, I've actually given thumbs up on occassion because someone gave an honest answer, whether I agreed with their point of view or not, apparently not everyone subscribes to the same philosophy.

I've actually looked at all the thumbs down on a position that was so obviously correct, or at least a very good point that was made, and said "how stupid!" right out loud. Glad I'm not the only one who thinks so.

See what happens sometime when you simply put the text of a Scripture and watch how many thumbs down God gets. Boo! Hiss!

Do you have any idea how your question sounds?

This is a religion and spirituality forum. The questions and answers are primarily philosophical. The answers are primarily not fact based, they are opinion based.

All of them, atheist, agnostic and theist.

It is practically impossible to have a "correct" answer.

There are only answers that either agree with an opinion or disagree with an opinion. Sometimes there are levels of agreement-disagreement with an opinion.

There isn't anything correct or incorrect about an opinion. Everyones opinion is just as valid as everyone else's.

Some opinions are uneducated, for example thinking opinions can be right or wrong. Some opinions are well educated. Some are ell researched. Some are badly researched.

Some people don't know the difference between a fact and a theory, or a fact and an opinion.

That does not make someone's opinion "correct" or "incorrect".

Why am I not surprised that this question was posted.

In an area like homework help, where there are definitely correct answers and incorrect answers, I'd tend to agree with you. Here, even when the question asked admits to a right or wrong answer, I just take it as part of the game people play to give thumbs down to answers expressing opinions with which they disagree. When you come right down to it, though, who cares?

Hello,

I see it as all in fun and some people are not trained or geared to be logical. Besides, you will never convince a hardened Nazi for example that the Jews fought for Germany in WWI and that Protocols Of Zion was a forgery nor will you convince a real Christian fundamentalist that man did not walk with dinosaurs a few thousand years ago no matter how strong and sensible the argument.

That said, we need to be thick skinned here and realize our answers do not make us Miss or Mr congeniality in these forums. Also let me remind you of the words of Niccolo Machiaveli who once said, " Beware when all speak good of you!"

Cheers,

Michael Kelly

I have speculated as to how certain groups can in essence ruin the "reputation" (which is now in force on Y&A) of someone who is very knowledgeable. I really feel that it can become a "controlled" situation from the aspects of certain groups.

Are we sure that thumbs down don't count against a reputation here?

I only give a thumbs down when a sarcastic and unnecessary answer is given. I don't care if you don't agree with me but don't take up space with a childish 5 year old answer. : D

If the thumbs down were given in this area: Religion and Spirituality..... It is because people only want to know their own opinion and the opinion of those that agree with them.... ALL others are wrong.... Sorry it is how religious zealots think.

Someone ask a question that stated they were leaving Christianity due to the hypocrisy.

My only answer was.

Revelation 18:4
And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.

I received many thumbs down then a violation.

Thumbing down is anonymous. It doesn't make anyone look anything aside from the recipient looking unpopular.

Amen, brother. I personally have decided to never thumbs down anyone. Everyone's entitled to their (however naive or rude) opinion.

The mark of someone who has truly found peace in their spiritual beliefs (athiest to fundamentalist) SHOULD be that they are not easily offended. If you're convinced that you are right, why worry what someone else says?
