Why do people who have never been to a country only go by what they have heard or see on the TV? And why do news crews try so hard to portray all women as being swathed in sheets and bags when this is not the case? I've been to Pakistan, a so-called "islamic" country. You know, where you've heard of unislamic honor killings being done (Islam says rapist gets stoned to death, not victim). I remember getting off of the plane in Lahore and looking around. The entire trip, most women were very loosely covered, if covered at all. Many only had the "dupatta" hanging off of their shoulders, but not their heads covered. And the style of clothing is so tight that even big chested women don't need a bra. I actually had to fight to get my own clothing made loosely because it was so tight I could not breathe. Why do you people (not all, some) hold so tightly to stereotypes even when they're broken right in front of you?

I also saw a question where a nonMuslim told a woman "try going uncovered in Saudi Arabia and see how long you last". Actually, for hajj to Mecca, the holiest place for Islam, it's forbidden for women to cover their hair. They may only dress modestly, but their heads may not be covered. I guess there goes that theory right out of the water, huh?

Well said....

However, I would like to make a point about your Quote.... "also saw a question where a nonMuslim told a woman "try going uncovered in Saudi Arabia and see how long you last". Actually, for hajj to Mecca, the holiest place for Islam, it's forbidden for women to cover their hair. They may only dress modestly, but their heads may not be covered. I think it's mandatory to cover your hair, but not the face during Hajj... personally preformed Hajj in 2001.

And to the nonMuslim dude/dudette you were referring to... well this is what I have to say to them ---> I have lived in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia for over 20 years and we had Western women parading around in Bikini's and Shorts in the residential compound where I lived....

I've been to Pakistan as well and let me tell you... Pakistan has some really 'hot' girls and they like to show it off to the genral public.... and when I wear the hijab there, I'm the odd one out.

lol I applaud you for this post sister, Ive been to Pakistan and people were actually looking at me because I DID cover. I went to a college there to meet my friend and there were girls wearing capris and t-shirts.. and I was the odd one out because I had on a baggy Kameez and dupatta which I made into a hijab.

Women in Iran are often portrayed as victims as well, even though most of them (and Ive been there) put the hijab on very loosly.. and it falls off their head while they are walking. They were wearing huge sunglasses and makeup.. the works.

I really don't care what anyone else wears, or doesnt.. but women being killed for not covering.. thats a load of... *blank*

The whole notion is simply false. Morocco is officially Islamic, while having a constitutionally-guaranteed right to practice other religions. Many - possibly most - of the women I saw there were "uncovered". No problem.

All of this American nonsense about the "Muslim head scarves" merely demonstrates Americans' ignorance of the rest of the world.

It's all rather carnal, isn't it? I mean, whether the hair is covered or not, is God offended, or is it certain people who are offended? If God were offended, then what is it that pleases Him? Is it covering or not covering your hair, or is it that you trust Him, which many people cannot do, nor can they fake it.

Anyone can cover their hair, but will anyone trust God for what He said?

Jesus didn't seem to bring up anyone covering or not covering their hair. Instead He preached worshiping God. And through Him the Redeemer:
23 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth."
( John 4 )

I've heard that that wearing shorts, etc., can get you publicly beaten in Saudi Arabia (and that it used to be that way in Afganistan.) I've never heard such a thing about Pakistan or other countries, or that going uncovered would get you killed in any country.

Ignorance like the first Crusades.

"If Europe had known as much of Islam, as Muslims knew of Christendom, in those days, those mad, adventurous, occasionally chivalrous and heroic, but utterly fanatical outbreak known as the Crusades could not have taken place, for they were based on a complete misapprehension... ----- Marmaduke Pickthall (1927)

Question:

Is this just anecdotal evidence, or are women free to dress as they choose throughout the entire country, and indeed throughout the entire muslim world?
