For the record, Darwin was raised a Christian and never claimed to be an atheist. He just couldn't believe that a god created man and indeed all life as is. He knew for a fact that life evolved and is ever evolving. There was no deathbed conversion for him.
Hitler was Catholic and got help and a smokescreen from the Vatican but I don't think he was devout really. He just used the bible to justify his actions, much like the inquisition did.
To be a Christian is simple. Belief and adherence to Jesus Christ. Though it's obvious you can move around in that very gray area.

The relationship between God and any individual of The Church is personal... no other mortal may stand in judgment of that relationship... and no other mortal may know"for certain" who is and who is not of The True Christian Faith... No "Bible Knowledge" is required for one to receive God's free gift of Salvation... Only God may declare any one to be a True Christian.
There are some outward signs... the "doing good deeds" bit... but there are many not of The Church who also do "good deeds".... there is no sure fire means of telling who is... but some can definitely be shown not to be...

Hitler was a devout Christian because he was raised as one and he never lost his faith as evidenced by his close association with the Catholic Church during the war. He even went so far to have a huge cross put up at his retreat 'The Eagles Nest'. Darwin 'did not' convert as much as the Christians tried to make it appear so. It did not happen.

It SHOULD be love and acceptance of others, and an active life that works towards social justice issues.
But that would mean that most American Christians are heretics of the worst kind.
I think it's 1 John that says anyone who says "Jesus is Lord" is a "true believer", and everybody else is the Anti-Christ. That seems to be the standard most people use.

The lack of bigotry and hate spewed by the majority of people that call themselves Christian.
The christian faith does not allow for treating badly even those who are not christian or those who have wronged or hurt you.
For example, that Amish school that got shot up a while back.
Did these people condemn the man that killed their children and then took his own life? No.
What did they do? They collected up funds to care for the wife and children of the gunman.
Put it in prospective people, This is one of the very few truly christian acts that I have even heard about in my lifetime.

Unconditional love and preaching the good news of the kingdom would probably be on the top of the list cuz that's what Jesus stressed the most for his followers... so whoever doesn't abide by those are automatically out of the question.

A true Christian is one who follows the Bible and Christ. The idea of being a true or false Christian is not man made. It is even mentioned in the Bible.
Matthew 7:20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.
Mat 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
Mat 7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?

The main mark is the self sacrificing love true Christians have for one another.
John 13:34, 35 - "A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another."
John 15:12, 13 - "This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends."

that's what Jesus and the disciples meant via fake instructors and fake prophets and warned us approximately them. Now, there's a time whilst Christians do ought to pass to conflict, yet this is for retaining their u . s . a . or helping preserve somebody elses u . s . a . whilst dictators cope with them inhuman. the main damaging is radical Islamic Muslims, getting into and attempting to take over countries and killing those that are no longer Muslims. whether you think this or no longer, they're here in u . s . of america and already attempting to take over, they like to coach their faith in our colleges, yet do no longer prefer ours taught. they're having this difficulty in Houston, Texas now interior the assorted colleges. They pass into those countries and attempt to place their regulation into prepare that's taking place international huge. each and every place interior the international this is battling now, that's with radical Islamic Muslims. we produce different fake instructors and prophets here, yet they're purely damaging spiritually, that's in simple terms as undesirable different than they are no longer doing it with bombs or reducing peoples heads off. Matt D..is actual everybody that teaches Jesus isn't the Son of God or that He did no longer die and upward thrust back and teaches against the Holy Spirit is a pretend instructor and prophet.
