Get him sonething that exemplifies his accomplishment, like a Jostens military ring with his branch of service and his military specialty on it; is pricey, but it will show him you care.
My parents gave me one with the American Eagle on one side and the crossed pistols (Military Police) on the other and a black opal with a gold incrusted "A" (for Army) on top; it has been my most valuable posession and one that I have cherished for most of 15 years of my life.

a great big hug. he has been in a lot of things that he never has been in before. if his mom is around he might go straight to mom. don't be upset. he still would rather have a hug and sloppy kiss from you. as for a gift give him a case where he can keep his army papers.
