Dear Hugabug-

There is only one known cure that my family has used for many years and unfortunately you are going to have to take a drive and use a shovel to get it!

The definae cure for this is a plant called Indian Soap Root.

No its not a joke, nor is it a myth.

This plant occurs in nature as a large bulb type plant with long lily like leaves that radiate out from a center. The leaves are slightly wavy along the edges.

If you live here in California it can be found along rural roads in the foothills, in hard soil environments.

Our FDA has overlooked its properties for curing such skin irritations including, Poision Oak, Poision Sumac, and Poision Ivy.

When I go hunting or fishing in these locations this is the first plant I seek out and up-root then carry with me, for just this reason.

When you use it you will cut the top of the bulb flat removing all of the leaves. Cut the bulb down until the white shows. You will also need to remove the outer layers of fiber until you reach the white interior.

Once you have done this, with a sharp knife crosshatch the top of the bulb to make a "Brush" this will foam up as you rub it over your skin. You can also chop the bulb up and add it to a warm bath, but that is a waste of the bulb and you will need several of them to make it work.

I use it by making a brush out of it.

The enzymes in the bulb neutralize the oils in the poison oak and absorb them into a harmless material. Then it can just be rinced down the drain. This may take several applications, but the effects will have the outbreak cured in about 3 days being used twice per day.

If you look up "Indian Soap Root" on the internet you should be able to find a picture of the plant so you can identify it and harvest it. You will normally find more than one growing in a single location so if you need several bulbs you can obtain them with a little effort.

At this time of year they are going to have the above mentioned look however they long leaves may be brown, and assiciated with a dry long flower shaft in the center. This does not mean the bulb below ground is still not viable.

The bulbs do not keep for very long after they have been used. So I normally collect three, use one and plant the other two in my yard to keep around the house just in case it happens again. I think I have 8 on hand in the yard right now.

If you live here in the Bay Area, take a drive up Mt. Hamilton Road toward the Observatory. I see them along the road in many locations along that route. Just be sure to print a picture and take it with you so you can properly identify the plant!

Good Luck

The reaction to poison ivy is from the oil in the plant - urushoil - contrary to popular belief, poison ivy is not spread by scratching; if your son has had another outbreak, he has been re-exposed to the oil. It can cling to clothing, shoes, toys. Wash everything that might have the oil on it. Otherwise, the prescription is probably the best you can do for treatment.

My mom used to have me wash my poison oak with teknu
but not only does it smell bad, it never really worked. Now my family just washes the poison oak with a soap called "Fels-Naphtha". I guess its for getting stains out of laundry or something, but it dries out the poison oak fairly quickly after a few uses.
I hope this helps!
