Elliptical! I have one in my home and use it all the time! It's easier (less impact) on all your joints and it takes up less space (even the really good ones like mine!) Plus you burn 1.5 times MORE calories per workout than just treadmill. Which, by the way, why would you buy a machine to walk when you can just go outside and walk? (or a mall to do laps?)
What to look for when buying is stability. When testing the ellipse, is it rough feeling? It should be smooth as silk motion with no rough road feeling. Is the stride long enough for you? Try a fast stride, does the machine wobble? You won't want that when you intensify your workout, and could signal how fast this machine will wear out.
I spent $1200 on mine, ($900 base cost + 5 year complete coverage plan) Your best deals on excercise equipment come around the Jan 1 marker (y'know- cashing in on all those resolutions!)

"If your intensity is the same on both machines, the elliptical has a slight calorie-burning and strength-training edge over the treadmill. That's because, as you're pumping the handles, you're working your triceps, shoulders, and chest. Just be sure all that upper-body work doesn't cause you to slow down, or you'll lose the advantage"

**also consider noise issues, whether or not you will be agile enough to run or will need the support an elliptical structure provides. Tripping on the treadmill because you are running when tired can have disasterous results!

I had an elliptical and I didn't like it all that much. Yes, it will give you a good work out and it's less impact but I really enjoy walking and running. I, personally like the treadmill, more variety.

You burn calories faster on a elliptical than a treadmill because it is a little more challenging than a treadmill. In a hour on treadmill you will burn 300 on a elliptical you burn 600

i have a treadmill and i've lost weight it works great but i wish i would have gotten an elliptical because sometimes the treadmill can be harsh on ur knees, i've heard that the elliptical isnt harsh on ur knees so if u have bad knees i would go with that and with the elliptical u burn more faster.

You can get shin splints from a treadmill - I did.
I'd go w/ the elliptical.
