I have an eight year old poodle. He is very sensetive and protective of me. Now my room mates dog passed away a few weeks ago. And she felt very lone some. This last Saturday we went to a canine store, and she fell in love with a small, toy Chihuahua by the name of Turbo. My Poodle had a peeing accident. I wonder if it's caused cause of the new friend? What's your best advice to all dog lovers and experts out there for me? Thanks. My poodle loves playing with the Chihuahua and we both watch while they are out there playing.

Well, thanks for all the helpfull hints. My poodle is on his bed right now, next to the Chi , she is in a fenced area. That leaves her enough room to roam around. They are both settling down for a nap, my room mate is at work and she misses her. But she is doing fine now.

Justin if you had any common sense, you would not have given such a low answer. I do not think you deserve the 2 points for that, just for having answered. I also reported you. Cause I find you distaste full!

I am surely glad to hear. I had one progress today. Petee my poodle showed her Chi sister Turbo that it was time for her to eat. Cause Turbos owner works all day and I am at home. So they shared the same doggy food and ate together, it was a picture perfect scene. Darn it. I hope it will get only better. Thanks all of you I enjoy reading your doggy stories. Hope more will answer.

When my ex and I got our Chihuahua, Mickey, our toy poodle Pepper was 4 1/2 years old. Pepper fell for Mickey and cleaned him, protected him and cuddled with him as often as Mick would let him. When they grew older Pepper became blind with cataracts and Mickey became his seeing eyed dog making sure he did not walk into anything or off the edge of the porch. We had 3 dogs when we got Mickey, we also had a 7 1/2 year old poodle chihuahua mix that also fell in love with Mick, she would roll around and play with him (something she never did with the other two dogs) and our Pomeranian became Mickey's roughhouse playmate. So each of our dogs made their own friendship with Mickey in their own way. So yes an older poodle can become friends with a chihuahua.

Some dogs will do some marking when a new dog is added to their territory. It could be that, or it could be something else. Just monitor him extra closely and make sure he's eating, drinking, playing and eliminating the same as before. If he is, it's most likely just marking.
If they play together, then that's a good sign, of course. It took my dogs a solid month to really become friends, but my dog was a little under a year old when I got my second pup, so she was able to adapt a bit easier than your older guy might. Obviously, don't leave them alone together for a few weeks to a month (or longer, depending on the situation), as he could do serious damage to such a tiny dog. Even if you think they get along, if there's ANY doubt, don't chance it.
I think dogs can adapt to huge changes even better than people can, and if you're careful to make sure he knows he is still your #1 and make sure your routines with him stay the same, in time (and it might be a long time), he should see the Chi as less of a rival and more of a friend.
Don't even buy another dog from a pet store, though! Puppymills should not be supported!
Good luck.

Hi there! I had a poodle when I was probably 10 and he passed away in 2004 he was an old pup but smart!! I would very much likely say the peeing accident is because of the new pup they take time to adjust to a new arrival and that is what I am going through now.
You know what our poodle use to do? If the stereo in our living room was too loud he would crap in front of it!! he also was not a fan of my sister and would occasionally crap in her shoe LOL! So I would very much say the peeing accident is due to the new pup and whether being intentional or accidental it is probably due to the new change of puppy pace. He should adjust it will just take a little time.
Hope this helps!

Yes, they willl continue to be friends. There may be some issues when Turbo gets fixed or when Turbo reaches about 10 months, but don't worry about that now.
The accident is just a little excitement, disoriented, territory thing... It should be over with now or within a week of playing with the puppy.
If you can keep them playing together, you will notice that your 8 yr old starts getting more playful and more frisky, as the puppy brings in new vigor and life.
Watch them closely when they play, because they will start getting rougher, snarling and growling, and trying to nip each other's legs... You want to understand that they are playing... and be able to recognize, if they ever switch from playing to fighting.
It won't happen while the puppy is young, but it will be fairly quick and obvious, if they ever get into it... Don't worry about it, just be aware of the possibility.

Why would anyone want to purchase a dog at a place called The Canine Store? AKA Puppy Mill
I'm sure they will both get along fine, next time get a dog from a reputable breeded or anything but a pet store.

Your poodle, considering the fact that he is older and has protective tendencies, may take a while to adjust to the new dog. The key is to introduce them slowly, and let them interact on their own terms (ALWAYS with supervision). They may never be friends but they will likely learn to tolerate each other and live peacefully together.

they might or might not get along. I would bet no, mainly because your dog is 8 and very protective. he is set in his ways.
Try introducing them slowly and limit their contact with each other until they seem friednly with each other. Try not to leave them alone together until you are 100% sure that the 2 are buds.
oh and next time tell your friend not to buy from a pet store, those pups come from puppymills!!!!

Friends? No. They're dogs, not people. They can become part of the same pack, dogs are pack animals. You're the pack leader. There is no reason they can't get along and play together. They just need proper leadership from you.

Best answer yet....Get a Poodle Hunting permit and then let it run loose somewhere in the wild and shoot it...that will end the peeing and the lonesomeness....Sure fire way!
