No, its not a virtue at all in my book, and it isn't a trait I possess. I believe if you got it, flaunt it. ;)

The Jewish way considers modesty a great virtue, especially in women. This includes modesty of dress, speech, thought, actions, etc. It applies to men as well.

Despite all the VT BS that has gone around R&S, I'm a pretty modest person in real life in most situations. I don't think it's necessarily a virtue, although we could use a little more of it in our society. Some people put way too much emphasis on it, some people don't focus on it enough.

Modesty/humility is a virtue, which is occuring less and less in current generations. I myself would not call myself modest (and anyone who does is, due to the nature of modesty, most decidedly not so).

It is a virtue and I can be very modest, depending on the situation.

If SwEeT GeOrGiA PeAcH doesn't just take the peach cobbler with that thoughful answer, there is no understanding of the word "modesty." It does not just mean covering up flesh, it is a way of life. I haven't acheived it for any sustained period of time, but it is a worthy goal.

I don't know. Can somebody be truly modest? I know many people do not know how to receive a compliment, but is that just their subconscious warning them that society looks down upon those who agree with the compliment? My favorite response to a compliment posed to Monica Belluchi (sp?) They asked her if she knew that she was the most gorgeous woman on the planet, and she just smiled sweetly and said. "Thank you."

Not really. Modesty is almost never sincere. And when it is, it often comes across as weakness... as a lack of self-respect.
I think that confidence tempered by a realistic awareness of your limitations is a virtue.

Modesty is only a virtue in sexually repressive cultures. Cultures that enforce it through norms or laws tend to develop any number of social problems.

Interestingly, Adam and Eve were ok being naked until they knew it was "wrong"... this is like saying that murder is ok until you know it's bad.
