3rd army or 7th army but those are not a unit but an army obviously. Patton's most famous unit was his beloved 3rd armoured division that was first in bastogne on december 19Th 1944. and no other.

While famous for many things his command of the 3rd US Army is the most recognized by the public. Few would be able to mention Africa or Italy. Even 36 years after the movie I will wager most think the slapping incident occurred while in command of the 3rd.

My Dad did most of his time on the Island of Attu. In Feb 44 many guy's were retrained to support the upcoming invasion. He ended up in HHQ/2/317 with the 80th ID on 6/Sep/44 30 days into Patton's end around. The 317th was Regimental reserve on the famous sweep to help the 101 (they did not need to be rescued, they just needed a little help) he did see Patton pass similar to the scene from the movie. He did some talking after the movie came out. All I can say is "Holy Crap" had the press been reporting facts that war would have been lost in the papers like VietNam.

The 317th is listed as a "Liberator" by the Holocaust museum arriving at Buchenwald on 12/Apr/45 and a sub camp in Austria just before the end of the war. Not sure if other 80th units received that honor. Other Divisions of the 3rd USA did.

There is a book "You can't get much closer than this" written by a Lt. that was with H/2/317. It's an eye opener and still in print.

General Patton was given command of the newly created 7th army just prior to the invasion of Sicily, but after the Sicilian campaign he was sent to Britain to act as a decoy for the Germans to make them believe he was leading an invasion to the Pas de Calais. After the invasion he took command of the 3rd US Army, and that was the unit he used to stunt the German offensive in the Arrdennes, The Battle of the Bulge, so I would have to say that the 3rd Army was probably his most famous.

The FUSAG.

It was a phony army set up in England prior to D-day to fool the Germans.

The Germans were terrified of Patton, so they gave him a fake army, to keep them guessing.

He is most famous for being commander of the 3d US Army.

That was the Army that broke out of Normandy and led the way across France and southern Germany.
