Our multinational society, our huge range of fast food outlets and restaurants, and our long history of trade in herbs and spices...Egg and Chips is still the best meal in the world?...oh ok...maybe with a slice or two of Wiltshire ham???

C'mon...admit it. A little salt and a sprinkle of malt vinegar on the chips, ground black pepper on the eggs and a dob of ketchup on the side...you know you want it!....

Egg and chips is a good basic meal with direct flavour, especially if the chips are double-cooked (fried 4 mins, taken out, drained and fried again in very hot oil.
TV chefs tend to'layer' flavour to create dishes that have more subtle flavours. Brian Turner, James Martin and Antony Worrall-Thompson's cooking is still pretty direct in flavour and is not pretentious.
Heston Blumenthal appears to have wacky ideas, but his cooking works, if you can be bothered to f*rt around prepping it.
Gordon Ramsay is probably the most controversial TV chef. He essentially cooks French Haute Cuisine which is beloved of celebs. Ramsay-style cooking can be very tasty - I can and have cooked in that style, but I prefer to cook and eat meals made from top ingredients, innocent of complex sauces and served with a herbed jus.

The best meal in the world? No, the easiest meal in the world!
Whilst I admin that the warm runny joke of a decent egg is the absolute best ingredient in the world, I can't condone that adding it to ham and chips would make it the best mean in the world.
If you poached the egg and served it on Black Pudding with an English muffin and some sauteed mushrooms, you'd be getting close.

Sorry, eggs and chips is not something I've ever heard of eating here in the US...
I'm assuming by chips you mean what we call french fries, or maybe hash browns...
Sounds okay, but eggs are still not my favorite thing to eat for breakfast, or anytime. Now, creamed chipped beef on toast, that sounds good!
