In some cultures like the Amazon Indians , they don't wear clothing, being inpactical, living in the rain forests where mosquitoes and insects thrive. But they still hang on to their identity, earings or tatoos are more important than covering themslves. So this theory that the way men look at women so they cover themselves may be a myth. The average woman is not always that beautiful but there is still that sexual attaction, I guess. Women wearing the veil, what aload of cock, tonight on the CNN you should watch 8 or 9 p.m. Behind the Veil, in Afghanistan, these religious police beat the "crap" out of them if they don't comply, that custom is very ancient, started way back in the fifth century in Babylonia, is today Iraq now.

muslim women cover themselves to be modesty and chasty, covering the face is optional if one does she'll get rewarded if not that is okey too.
hijab protects me and people treat me for who i'm, not what i look like,,
if muslim women are happy with it, and believe me we are. no man is forcing us to wear it. we choose and we are doing it for higher authority Allaah(swt) and not for my hubby, bro , or dad, why does it get so much attention from non muslims, i guess they need excuses to pretend to free women from the so called oppression they are in.
I am a Muslim woman
by Jenn Zaghloul
I am a Muslim woman
Feel free to ask me why
When I walk,
I walk with dignity
When I speak
I do not lie
I am a Muslim woman
Not all of me you'll see
But what you should appreciate
Is that the choice I make is free
I'm not plagued with depression
I'm neither cheated nor abused
I don't envy other women
And I'm certainly not confused
Note, I speak perfect English
Et un petit peu de Francais aussi
I'm majoring in Linguistics
So you need not speak slowly
I run my own small business
Every cent I earn is mine
I drive my Chevy to school & work
And no, that's not a crime!
You often stare as I walk by
You don't understand my veil
But peace and power I have found
As I am equal to any male!
I am a Muslim woman
So please don't pity me
For God has guided me to truth
And now I'm finally free!

Muslim women do not have to cover their face but they have to cover their hair. Muslim women cover their face so that there is a less possibility for men to attack them and what not. There's billions of reasons why Muslim women cover their face, such as, to get closer to Allah, to be known for their intellect rather than their beauty, to give their beauty only to their husband, etc etc.
Covering the face and the hair is a choice not forced. Some men are backwards and think that they can force their women to do what they want but its totally against Islam. Covering one's body is the woman's choice and it's NOT because women have to because men have sexual thoughts. Men are accountable for what they do. The sin is not just on the women.
to answer brainstorm: men don't cover their faces because not alot of women rape men...

As Muslim women, we are not obliged to cover our faces. Some do, who are extra cautious. Adultery is not a one step thing, like bang I just screwed someone... It starts with something as simple as a glance or eye-lock... Nuns cover their heads aswell, yet they are highly respected in society... I wish the Islamic hijab would get more repect than hatred.

The New Testament says the same thing............
Whosoever looketh upon a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already. If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.
(MATT 5:28-29).

They HAVE to cover them selves, when in public, from head to toe to prevent men from committing adultery. Unless I am mistaken, looking at a women who is not your wife with lustful thoughts is considered adultery in Islam. Since men cannot control their sexual thoughts, they force their women to cover themselves. If you can see nothing, you can lust after nothing. Do you understand a bit better? They don't hold the man accountable for the way he thinks, they hold the woman accountable for the way she looks. How backwards is that. What I do not understand is why men are not held to the same standards. A woman can have lustful thoughts as well. Wait, I forgot. They hold the woman responsible for her thoughts and not the man for his looks. Damn my progressive thinking towards equal rights, it causes me confusion every time. /sarcasm off

That might be part of it. I think it has something to do with being modest and not wanting to be treated differently by guys for being pretty (or ugly). Lots of times guys probably look at a pretty lady and think "oh, I'd definately want to @#%$ her, etc.", and this would kind of prevent that.
I don't really get it either, but if they want to, it's their choice.
