Evangelism, from the greek Euangelios, meaning 'the good news', means to tell people good news. In the Christian tradition, it is the practice of telling people the good news that no matter who they are, or what they've done, there is hope for them that they can be saved from the condemnation that humanity deserves through salvation in Jesus Christ.
Evangelism has often been seen as the job of gifted speakers and creative people, but is the responsibility of every Christian. Jesus clearly instructs his followers (i.e. his disciples, which means pupils) to 'Go out into the world and make disciples of all the nations..., teaching them" This is the final instruction of Matthew's Gospel (Matt 28:19-20), and since the Gospel was originally written to be read out at public gatherings, Matthew clearly wanted people to feel like they were sent out to proclaim the Gospel by hearing it.
Modern Evangelism often takes the form of speaking in public places in a way that encourages people to think about their own beliefs, and reflect on the choices they make.

The term 'evangelism' originally referred to sharing good news.
e.g. Luke 8:1 ....Jesus went about preaching the good news about God's kingdom.
He was an evangelizer.
Matthew 28:19 has Jesus commissioning his followers to take-up the work of evangelizing.
That means his followers should have some good news to share about the kingdom of God.
Sadly, the organization Jesus started became corrupted.
Evangelism became a vague idea that usually ended-up in people giving money to hypocritical snake-oil salesmen.
