Most non-Catholic Christian denominations accept Catholics as Christians. A very few do not.

A dictionary would say that a Christian is someone professing belief in Jesus as Christ or following the religion based on the life and teachings of Jesus.

Catholics would fit this definition.

In the Nicene creed, from 325 C.E., Catholics profess:

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, one in being with the Father.

Through Him all things were made.

For us and our salvation He came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit, He was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man.

For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered, died, and was buried.

On the third day He rose again in fulfillment of the scriptures: He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. We are baptized as Jesus commanded in Matthew 28:19, "in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit."

We truly are spiritually "born again," we just don't usually use those words.

For a complete description of what Catholics believe, see the Catechism of the Catholic Church: http://www.usccb.org/catechism/text/index.htm

With love in Christ.

"Christian" is anyone who believes that Jesus was the Messiah. Jesus was a Jew. He was the Messiah. Those who believed that were the first Christians or followers of Christ. Those who did not remained Jews or whatever they were before Jesus came along.

It seems that some Protestant religion somewhere is teaching that Catholics are not Christians for some reason. That is not the case.

Are you asking why the Pope and his Cardinals consider themselves christians?

From this question I'm assuming you're protestant. Catholicism is the first christian religion. Here is the Nicene creed of the Catholic faith, professed at every mass:

"We believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, and born of the Father before all ages. (God of God) light of light, true God of true God. Begotten not made, consubstantial to the Father, by whom all things were made. Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven. And was incarnate of the Holy Ghost and of the Virgin Mary and was made man; was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate, suffered and was buried; and the third day rose again according to the Scriptures. And ascended into heaven, sits at the right hand of the Father, and shall come again with glory to judge the living and the dead, of whose Kingdom there shall be no end. And (I believe) in the Holy Ghost, the Lord and Giver of life, who proceeds from the Father (and the Son), who together with the Father and the Son is to be adored and glorified, who spoke by the Prophets. And one holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. We confess (I confess) one baptism for the remission of sins. And we look for (I look for) the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen."

No, they consider themselves sinners first.

Second, they consider themselves servants of the servants of the Lord.

Finally, they believe in the saving power of the Risen Lord, Jesus Christ, the Son of God. That is what makes them Christians.

(personal opinion here)

I believe that altho the Catholic Church was the original church in Christ's name and spirit, that it has since decayed into a state of apostasy.

Why? Simple. Do they EVER teach the covenant of the New Testament. It is this SINGLE covenant that provides for the salvation of the eternal soul thru Jesus, Son of the one true God. To TEACH this covenant is Christian. To IGNORE it (as it seems many/most/nearly all Catholic Churches do) is apostasy for anyone claiming to be Christian.

Because they confess the Creeds of Christendom, the very basics of the Christian Faith "once deliveded unto the Saints"

Apostle's, Nicene and Athanasian Creeds:

The Nicene Creed (325 A.D.): I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all worlds; God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God; begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made.

Who, for us men for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; He suffered and was buried; and the third day He rose again, according to the Scriptures; and ascended into heaven, and sits on the right hand of the Father; and He shall come again, with glory, to judge the quick and the dead; whose kingdom shall have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Lord and Giver of Life; who proceeds from the Father and the Son; who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified; who spoke by the prophets.

And I believe one holy catholic and apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins; and I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Catholicism originated from its founder Jesus Christ. Why do you think the first Catholics were called Christians?

Christianity is defined by the common belief that Christ died for their sin and He is the son of God. They are also in unity in regards to the trinty. For this reason they are as much Christian as any Christian

Because they follow the teachings of Jesus Christ - specifically to love God with all of their heart, mind, soul, and strength and their neighbor as themselves.

If you do this, you could call yourself a Christian.
