When you saved the document, were you careful to save as a Word document where you specify file type?

Right-click on the icon for the file and select Properties. Does it say Word document? Do you get the option to "open with" so you can select Word?

When you open the document, look to the top left for the name of the font. Did you accidentally change the font from something ordinary like Tmns Roman or Courier to a strange-sounding font? If so, press Control+A to select the whole file, then at the top left, click the down arrow next to the font name and select a common text font.
