(No offense intended - I really would like to know about this.)
My friend (now Wiccan) was raised in a very strict So. Baptist family. Their church frowned upon dancing. Why ? Just curious.
The Church Lady loves a good Macarena . . .

Ah yes ! - "Footloose" is a movie I missed. So THAT's the plot, eh ? I'll watch it . . .if only to improve my "6 Degrees of Kevin Bacon" game :)

Probably because dancing was thought to create lustful desire, and sexuality is frowned upon in a strict baptist church. Could also have some relationship to a christian possibly non denominational practise of dancing in the holy spirit, supposedly god takes over the people and they start dancing, even though some of the dancing is beforehand choreographed. Could be that baptist church thought this was blasphemous.

sure, they are that strict. I attended Baylor college in Waco, Texas (my residing house) for a on an identical time as, nevertheless i ultimately transferred and graduated someplace else; this is the biggest Baptist college interior the international, and there improve right into a great debate there for a on an identical time as approximately offering issues like ballet and dance aerobics! There had under no circumstances been a dance on campus until eventually a minimum of the 1880s (possibly the 90s - i do no longer remember precisely), whether it improve right into a great adequate deal to make the close by papers whilst it ultimately befell.

I chased a skirt through the doors of the Baptist church when I was a junior in high school. The Asst. Pastor said I needed catechism and I thought he said circumcision. I never went back. Southern Baptists also frown upon drinking, but I see a lot of them in Alcoholics Anonymous.

It is just as bad with the Southern Nazarene. When I lived in Oklahoma I went on a retreat (with some friends) and mentioned that all we needed was a dance, you'd have thought I said "fire" in a theater. The response was "Nazarenes don't dance". The movie Footloose was based on an actual event in Elmore City, Oklahoma.

I grew up Congregational Methodist (United Methodist/Southern Baptist hybrid), and they also frowned upon dancing. Dancing was only allowed if it was movement within the spirit...like overcome with the love of god and dancing in worship. Any other dancing was considered dirty, like foreplay or something.

I think that they think that it might lead to something sexual. They also frown on drinking and playing cards, but for different reasons.
I find this really sad! The Psalms talk of dancing before the Lord for joy and praise and we know that David did it, too. Just another example of 'getting more religious than God'.

Actually, strict Southern Baptists won't even make-love standing up.
They are afraid that God might *THINK* that they are "dancing".

They don't even like square dancing! The old joke about no sex standing up because it might lead to dancing is correct!
