It's the secret to charisma.If you have a good charisma, you already know what a powerful weapon is a warm smile.People smile when they like something, when something make's them feel better, etc. ( Remember what you can do with a smile.A simple smile could make others think that they have something special )
Effects
First of all, smiling puts everyone at ease.When someone smiles at you, very rarely do you not smile.This is an inconstient action.If we go out we can see that not many people like to smile.They have problems, other things in mind or we don't smile more often because we're afraid to show our vulnerability and soft side.
The reason the smile is so effective is because you reflect goodness to someone.Do you remember a moment when a person smiled to you ? How did you felt then ? Smile is a stress buster. But sometimes it is a veil behind which the real emotions are hid. I remember a beautiful verse from a hindi film song which goes like this;

The Value of Your Smile

The lovely Vietnamese Zen teacher, Thich Nhat Hanh, highlights the value of smiling.
I once saw him giving a talk to a large audience in Berkeley, and at one point he interrupted himself, smiled, and said, "Some of you are not smiling." And that made everyone smile, and then he went on with his talk!
I just Googled Thich Nhat Hanh and smile, and came across some of his quotes involving smiles. Here are two:
Sometimes your joy is the source of your smile, but sometimes your smile can be the source of your joy.
Smiling is very important. If we are not able to smile, then the world will not have peace. It is not by going out for a demonstration against nuclear missiles that we can bring about peace. It is with our capacity of smiling, breathing, and being peace that we can make peace.

A smile tells others that you feel happy inside, that you wish to show kindness to others and hope that others will feel the want to smile also.
I always try to smile at others. It feels better to be happy than down, even if I have personal challenges. Find the things that create happiness within.

Each time we smile, we evolve further into a better human being.
So yes, it is indeed a wonder. Smile works wonders. The wonder within often remains undiscovered, overshadowed by external petty gains ! Else, why would people 'shy' away from each small opportunity to smile (right from sunshine to that beautiful moonlight!)

Actually, when we smile a whole biochemical process is enacted in the body. So, in effect, we cannot give away a smile without also benefiting from it ourselves. :)
