Sure, some atheists may seem to be here soley for the purpose of saying that we are brainwashed, ignorant/uneducated, and whatnot, however I believe that most atheists come here because they feel religious bias in the laws of the country(US), and want to voice their views directly to the source..So, my question is: Do we (Christians) have a duty to our belief to push lawmakers to impose new laws regarding homosexuality, prayer in public schools, and abortion rights?
Or, Is our goal to build the body of Christ. Does the first support the second?

We know what sin is, and we know how we want to live our lives, but it is free will right? People are going to do what they want regardless of God's law, or whether it is the right thing to do or not, so are Christians wasting their time in politics?

I just want to thank you for speaking sanely about us, and for being real with your fellow Christians. My intent is not to offend or convert any of you away from your beliefs, and I apologize if I do so unintensionally.

Christians ARE putting too much effort into politics. Just making laws for abortion and homosexuality aren't going to actually stop the people who want an abortion or who are homosexual. Drinking and driving is illegal, but yet, people do it all the time.

Christians need to focus on winning the lost to Christ instead of spending so much time and money on politics. A person who is Born Again won't have the abortion (and would be married, so there wouldn't be an unwanted pregnancy in the first place) or be a homosexual - like they would have when they were lost.

I actuallly support gay marriage, because whether or not we allow it, there will still be homosexuals - it makes no difference. And not allowing gay marriage is creating hatred between homosexuals and Christians, making it a lot harder to minister to homosexuals.

Christians need to get out of government and into people's lives!

I believe that many of the laws of this country have been inspired by God. The Declaration of Independence and the Constitution have aspects of a belief in God. When Jefferson wrote, "Endowed by our creator...," many believed that he was not a Christian. He was also an intelligent man, knowing that not all in the colonies were of the Christian faith. So was the authors of the Constitution, not everyone in the Continental Congress was Christian, yet they all agreed that in some way this should help keep religion free from those that would try to subdue it and keep us from practicing it freely and in public. The laws that govern against murder, theft, in some states adultery, making false accusations about our fellow citizens (perjury). These are laws governing our land. The Constitution gives us the freedom of religion, and to use a clique, not the freedom from it. If you don't like a display of the "Ten Commandments" in a courthouse, ignore it. A monument is not forcing you to relent to its belief. Weak-minded people and I do mean weak-minded people are the one that usually complain about these things. I don't care if you believe in God, Vishnu, Zeus, or any other belief. I would not care if a pentagram was included into the structure of a courthouse alongside a Christian cross and an Islamic crescent. This is the United States of America, and we are allowed to worship who, where, and how we may. If a state wants to allow prayer in public schools, then let vote on it. I mean the people voting, not congress or the courts. That is why Californians voted in the proposition of determining that marriage is to be between a man and woman. And California is considered one of the most liberal states in the nation.

No such thing. An atheist believes in NO god/desses. That would include Allah,Ganesh, Kali, Isis, Thor, Gaia, Danu, etc...most English speaking users are on here and are raised Christian, but I'd say my morals & beliefs are from a mixture of empathy & society. I am pro-choice, and so are many Xians and I am also vegetarian. The Bible is very contradictory. That whole 'not killing' thing? A lot of Xians don't seem to have a problem with factory farms, the death penalty or going to war. And if you read the OT, you don't have to go far to read some story where the 'chosen ones' are commanded to kill. There are over 30,000 Xian denom's out there...there's a reason why.

Christians are not wasting their time in politics. BUT....Their time could be better spent spreading the Word of God. THe laws that govern us are made by man. God controls all things but that is His concern not ours. We are told to pray about these things. Many times you see the so called "power" you get in politics and you get the feeling of "I" am doing this and "I" am that. Not giving the praise to God is not good.

Building the body is primary. Also the Church is to be a light in the darkness, right? What better way to show your light than standing in the darkness and let it shine. I would say that you have to remember that you are held to a higher standard. The Lord not man.

Remember too laws really just make more people mad at others for making them. Love God and Love your neighbor. Start there.

Imposing anything that takes away freedom of choice or freedom of sexual difference, is nothing more than bigoted, remember that is what the Nazis tried to do and loook where it got them. What makes you, through the guise of your faith, Gods disciple to make these choices for people, are not Homosexuals,Atheist and any other human being, Gods children as well, according to your faith, they are! it is not God that damns these people, it is the church, for within your belief, God created them, as he did you. The church was founded by bigots and fascists who feared anything from the norm' that they didn't understand, with the education system we have today I would have thought beliefs like this would have become non-existent. The bible was written in the Bronze age, they knew no better, people today should!

What a breath of fresh air. I've made this point several times, but from an atheist, it seems like propaganda to the christian masses. People with your mindset are what's needed in this country. If preachers taught what you just wrote, you'd never hear a speck of complaint from educated atheists about christianity, as we would live and let live. Thank you for posing this question to your fellow christians, I hope that some of them understand and spread the idea.

American atheist here... The more Christians try to tamper with the politics of American democracy, the larger the groundswell of indignant public opinion against them will be. If Christians were smart, they'd confine themselves to proselytizing their faith. Unfortunately, Christians are seriously under-represented on the right-hand side of the intelligence bell-curve and there already exist active Dominionists who are tirelessly working to undermine American democratic principles for the sake of their religious agenda. When enough loyal Americans realize what the religious right is up to, there will be howls of indignent protest which could possibly result in a Constitutional amendment to eliminate much of the privilege religion currently enjoys. Morphing Christianity into a genuine threat to American liberties could easily unleash a wave of anti-religious politics which would change everything. Before Christian usurpers attempt to undermine America's democratic principles, they would do well to remember that the atheist/scientific position enjoys the advantage of being solidly based on factual truth. Public education has done its job -- we won't be fooled again.

There are all kinds of people on here seeking to know more. Some of them know that is why they are here and some do not realize that that is why they are on here.

God places each of us where He wants us for a reason. I know I am not on here by chance. I also know what it is like to be an un-believer, because I used to be one. I know too that people shared their faith with me back in my un-believing days and I ridiculed them, made fun of them, and offered up what I thought were some very good reasons why God didn't exist. Now I see those same words from people on here. I know there is still hope for those people just like there was for me.

Do we lobby our lawmakers? Yes, because we are supposed to be involved and because that is the way the system is set up in the United States, but we shoulld put a much greater emphasis upon prayer. Laws make people behave differently on the outside, but prayer changes hearts and minds. Prayer is what changed my life. Thank God He prompted people to pray for me.

Believers should be involved in politics as long as they do not compromise their principle beliefs as a result.

God bless you.

I used to be an atheist before but thankfully not now, 100 % believer now and the atheists here that have not converted yet are only here for one reason, to learn more about God because they are fence sitters still not sure if they want to jump in. REAL atheists like I used to be would never hang out in a place such as this that is full of religion. in their questions and answers they will deny it but that is only so their friends that see their questions an answers will not make fun of them.they will put up a very strong anti-God front but a front is all it really is.....100 % here are secretly fence sitters,..no true atheists here so keep preaching, they really do want to hear it....

The label "Atheist" is a very large brush to paint people with. It includes people who do not believe in GOD, People who are Anti Christ, People who are curious why we do believe, and many rebellious Christians who are convicted and trying to justify their sins. GOD can also be an easy scapegoat for those who are to lazy to address their negative life issues.
As far as the law's of this land. I think we should stay very clear of government and our education system. The word of GOD in the hands of unbelievers causes much more damage then it's worth. Could you imagine if creation was taught in schools? It would be tragic to say the least. The hack job that would be done to the Bible in the name of political correctness would be criminal.

MooOO!
