Almost all of the stuff we have for our son requires batteries. Rechargeable D's are very expensive and they don't last very long. His crib mobile requires 4 and not only do they need to continually be changed, it's a pain to get them out every time this happens. Any suggestions on how to convert these to an AC adaptor would be great. Thanks!

Not a good idea. These electronics are not tested to withstand surges or spikes from your mains. You could make them short or worse catch fire!!

look at lithium cells for longevity much safer.

Well actually you use a AC to DC adapter.
You need to know if the Toy use 1.5 Volts or 6 Volts. This will depend how the batteries are lined up. If, they it Series - to + to - to + etc. this Series and 6 volts DC. So you need an AC to DC adapter that make 6 volts. If, the Batteries are in Parallel all negative and all positive connected then it 1.5 volts DC and that what you need. You main concern then will be it have enough Amps. Most times the manual may give the electric requirement or it on the battery box. Say something like 6 VDC @ 32 mA (mA being milli-amps). Then in your battery box you connect the Positive wire to Positive and the Negative wire to Negative. Be sure your wires connected so they are insulated.

The link is for example only as I not know what you will need. You would cut off the end and connect the wires direct to the battery box or make a plug for it. Radio Shack may be a good source for your adapter.
