A person who reads their chosen book (bible, koran, etc.) and takes everything in it literally - for example, believing the universe was created in six days, believing a guy lived in a fish belly for three days, etc.

The less educated a person is, the more likely they'll be a fundie.

The term `fundamentalism' has its origin in a series of pamphlets published between 1910 and 1915. Entitled "The Fundamentals: A Testimony to the Truth," these booklets were authored by leading evangelical churchmen and were circulated free of charge among clergymen and seminarians. By and large, fundamentalism was a response to the loss of influence traditional revivalism experienced in America during the early years of the twentieth century. This loss of influence, coupled with the liberalizing trends of German biblical criticism and the encroachment of Darwinian theories about the origin of the universe, prompted a response by conservative churchmen. The result was the pamphlets. In 1920, a journalist and Baptist layman named Curtis Lee Laws appropriated the term `fundamentalist' as a designation for those who were ready "to do battle royal for the Fundamentals."

A fundamentalist is an extremist who claims to adhere only to the "fundamentals" of a religion's doctrine. In Christianity, fundamentalism did not exist until the 20th century, although its propagandists like to pretend that it is of ancient vintage.

Fundy Rule #1. I already have the basic and definitive information for my
life.
The implication is that the believer is his/her own thought authority. And,
it is supremely
more important to believe than to think, i.e. question one's (so-called)
knowledge.

Fundy Rule #2. I am my beliefs.
The implication is that if someone sets about to alter those beliefs the
threat looms that the
believer can be changed, i.e. damaged, or bereft of identity (mostly
community), without his/her will.

Fundy Rule #3. Either hide or attack. Don't engage.

Attitude A: It is absolutely sufficient to believe what I believe. Nothing
further is required.
Attitude B: You are a lost soul and to be pitied. And forgiven for not
knowing the Lord.
Attitude C. There will be a day of reckoning. I need not judge for there
will be One who does.

It means different things to different people.

In the religious sense, I've always thought that it means a person who interprets a holy text literally, and is attempting to live in a way that reflects the fundamental principals of the holy text.

Edit: I'm a 'fundy'

Edit edit: I never knew I was all of those things! Thanks for filling me in, people above me. I'll keep a closer eye on myself.

Fundamentalists believe that:

1) Jesus is God, and Jesus died for our sins on the cross and rose again. Believing this saves you, but if you reject it to your dying breath, you go to hell for eternity
2) The Bible is the Word of God, absolute, without error, and the final authority
