I have seen many people die. In general, if you are dying of a chronic medical condition it does not hurt. If you due of a heart attack it hurts. Cancer hurts. Traumatic deaths may hurt depending on how long you are alive following the traumatic event.
I believe that in cases of severe trauma your body send such an array of pain-killing chemicals (including morphine) that you become unaware of the pain. Many people who have lived through hugely traumatic incidents also say that they became unaware of the pain, and were consumed with the fight to live.
There are many different schools of thought on this topic. These are just my observations and things I have learned from patients.

The exact moment of death should be painless as it is the cessation of physical and mental functioning, but the process of death could be very painful or peaceful. Some people die naturally and just seem to fall to sleep. If you watch the cardiac and blood pressure monitors of these people they will have a slowing of the systems or cessation of the systems without the blood pressure elevation associated with pain. However, if you consider people who have died consumed in fires, they seem to be in pain until they cease to function.

Depends how and where you die?
You could die at home in your sleep. Peacefully and no nothing of it.
You could die in the middle of the road in pain after being hit by a car... or an ambulance could pick u up and bring you into hospital where they could let you have a painfree death...
One things for sure once it's over it's over... so at the end of the day, it only really matters to your relatives because once it's over it's over and you'll know nothing about it :)

I don't believe that death is painful. Stressful, yes. Painful, no. Our brains are capable of doing amazing things when it comes to pain management. There are certain chemicals that are released into the bloodstream during intensely emotional moments, and these effectively block pain. Of these, adrenaline and ketamine are the most effective, and I believe that ketamine is the one responsible for the serenity that is often seen on the faces of the dying during those last few seconds of life. I should add, I guess, that I was badly injured in a car accident, flatlined in the ambulance, and had to be brought back. It was not painful; in fact, it was very peaceful.

Honey,I personally would not know....I am alive and well.(Thank God)!! LOL!! Seriously, I have heard that you can experience pain prior to death, but I guess it depends on what situation the dieing person is in.I don't think actual death hurts!(opinion and thoughts only)!!!

It all depends the way you die. A painless mean to die I incidentally discovered is cold. You just shiver a lot (because you are cold, of course), and you get drowsy, sleepy; before you fall asleep and then die. Few candidate to suicide think about this cool (sorry) way.

Try not to worry about this - in many cases the dying person is given pain killing medication, is unconscious or in shock, so feels no pain. In any case, you won't suffer from flashbacks afterwards, will you?!

If you get shot, stabbed, run over etc, yes it will hurt a lot!
If you take arsenic, it will be over in about 20 secs!
Are you planning to die soon then? lol
