Say if two blokes were standing there and one was average/skinny and the other had large muscles, but apart from that they looked quite similar, same height etc, which one would you prefer.
I am not talking about personality here, I am just talking about initial attraction.

Hmmm, this is interesting. So why do so many guys go through so much effort to build muscles if it is not for women?
Maybe they just want to be prepared for when they have to lift that car off a trapped pedestrian?

Women like different things but personally I would go for the skinny/average guy. Actually, in scientific studies of sexual behaviour it has been found that human females go for athletically built males and the theory goes that it is because these males would be quick and strong so would be better hunters. Men who are very skinny are probably sickly and overly muscled men are muscle-bound and not very quick. I'd go for something in the middle if I were you.
As regards the reason for men wanting to look bigger, this is because genetically healthy men produce more testosterone (a natural steroid) and so are naturally more muscular and are more likely to build muscle easily. Larger men are also more symmetrical, which is key to sexual attraction. However, the largeness has to be natural for this to indicate symmetry so men who are naturally weedy who pump iron are deluding themselves into thinking they can delude women with their muscles.

Maybe if the muscle guy wasn't a total meat head-you can't go on physical appearance.even if you only want sex there has to be a connection.
Iv'e seen hunky guys (at the beach) yes they can look attractive depending what time of the month it is,
but tend i to be put of as they must be narcissistic. Sorry
Skinny/average is fine but not too bony though.

I like muscles yes, but too much would put me off. Being over muscled says a lot about a guy (like gym-aholic, looks-obsessed, shallow, him-bo) Average/skinny wouldnt put me off. I wouldnt say I could choose between 2 guys based on just that criteria though, more likely their eyes, or their smile, something that speaks more about their personality.
Sorry, you're stuck with it Girls really do care about what a guy's personality is like!
PS if you just want lots of casual sex, dont just stand there waiting, go and ask!

Well, I always thought I preferred a little bit of muscle but my long-term boyfriend is very skinny and I love him to bits and he is amazingly attractive to me.
I know you are not talking about personality but in a relationship that really is what it comes down to. If someone is with you just for your appearance it will probably never last.

I find myself more attracted to muscular men. Something about the size and strength. Not that I am helpless, my mom and I both do martial arts, but it is nice to know people aren't going to mess with you when they see you with someone that looks like the Hulk. My Dad was a professional body builder and so were all of his friends, so it could just be a case of being daddy's girl, or maybe smaller guys are just to scared of Dad to come around ;-)
But I also like someone who is taller than me when I am wearing heels, I'm 5'7" bare foot, so that gets a little hard.

Probably the dude with less muscles, i think alot of muscles are ugly and usually means that guy is obsessed with his appearance. Also guys who have alot of muscles tend to think they are "high class" and think they are "all that" etc. of course after getting to know someone you might find out otherwise but definitely the average guy would seem more approachable. I look at a whole lot of muscle as a "whole lot of baggage".

Me personally no. Slightly toned is nice but not essential but large muscles no. I don't think any of my female friends go for guys with muscles. adverage/skinny is probably better.

I've always thought I liked men with muscles - but I've recently been into a guy who isn't very beefycakey at all!
